Not only am I training for my first 24hr race next season but I think I am going to do the dh at the Downieville Classic. Just read an artical on it and a 40 minute, 16 mile dh sounds like fun. There is 500' of climbing involved but that is not that much seeing that there is 4800' of descending.
The winner in my class did it in 50:19.60 this year, I think I could beat that.

Hell Yeah!
Right on DBD, I'm leaning more towards endurance too, but mainly thinking of biatholon or tri? Then, MAYBE a 24 hr beast of a race...
Downieville Rocks! Used to live in Sacramento and ride up that way a lot! Auburn, Grassvalley, South Lake Tahoe. The Pioneer Trail is my favorite, but that's only because I never got to come down the infamous Downieville Downhill. We tried to go way too early in the season and there was snow everywhere!!! We drove all the way up there, shuttled the cars, got to the trailhead (over 8,000 ft) and the ground was covered with snow. We were in shorts and tshirts and went for it. The first 4 miles is all uphill and you know the rest. Well after a couple hours of hike a bike, and constant references to the trail guide, we arrived at the highest point of the trail, looked around in all directions, and just could NOT find the trail... There was so much snow that nothing was decipherable, we resorting to looking at all the trees, some are scarred, some marked (but for all different reasons). Had to give up, turn around, and "Hike" back down. All in all, we were out for like 4 hours hiking through the snow in bike shoes and lycra. That was a pretty disappointing day, knowing that if we had just found the trail, and lost just enough elevation, it would have become rideable all the way to the bottom "AND" we would've been the first people on the trail that season!
Damn, that place Haunts Me, writting about that day is bringing it all back - I'm frusterated now and must go... (hopefully replacing my inner chainring and installing my brand new aluminum chainring bolts will make me feel better) :D
Peace Out,
Hawk
