I'm going to be on a Cross Canada trip this summer and would like to set up some insurance for this. Manulife seem to offer really good out of province health insurance but nowhere can I seem to find a policy that is going to cover both my bike and my kit.

Does anyone have any recommendations.

Home contents insurance is out of the question because I've been staying with friends in Toronto and am not covered under their provisions.

Get your bicycle insurance from your home insurance provider. I recommend going with CAA if you can, but your own home insurance provider might have a good deal on bicycle insurance too.

But they are different departments of CAA.

Even though you are staying with friends, I'd still recommend talking to CAA about it. Or another option might be to pay the extra on your friend's insurance to cover your bicycle ... that's the route I'm going right now.

What does one need out of province insurance for? I have been banged up in various provinces on various occasions, and I just paid for it through OHIP.
