Commuting - A cartoon for you all!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Cool. But when's the last time you heard a gas pump that ding'ed? I'd guess early 80's, and that was ones in the boonies.
When's the last time you saw free air at a gas station?

California gas stations are required by law to give you free air and water, but only if you buy gas from them. Which, really doesn't apply to this forum :)
Wheel up on your bike and buy $.79 of gas for your lawnmower, then demand free air :)
 Excellent. I love it. :D

Many of the gas stations in Atlanta have free air. Problem is, most of the air hoses have a broken nozzle.
I get all the free air I want from my floor pump. :)

The gas station closest to my condo has free air. It actually had me confused the first time I used it, couldn't figure out where to put my quarter in it.

Looks more like a hybrid with knobies. Note the riser bars...
Anyhow, I'd guess that's for mass appeal -- road bikes' drop bars get a bad rep among the clueles, errr, sheep, err... you know, non-cyclists. :D

When's the last time you saw free air at a gas station?Or an air hose with working fittings? Or an air hose with the compressor turned on? ;)

You mean like the risers on my mtb? (Check the sig). And the bike has a Schraeder valve cuz gas stations don't have presta valves. Just like my bike. :D

i read filling up on one of those gas station compressors is bad for your tubes--like its too high powered and could pop tubes easily, dont know where i read it. i got my pump that works really good (a few of them) but thats an awesome cartoon just the same.

Sounds like urban legend invented by someone who left it on too long. As a kid I would use the gas station air all the time and never had a problem, so I'd think an adult could figure it out too.

^^^ i guess the risk is in filling up a road tire. mtb and pretty much all bikes have more surface area in the tube and the psi increases at a slower rate as opposed to you know.....road tires..i imagine the tires would fill up much faster than you migh notice and KABOOM.

In my experience, the opposite has been true... try finding a compressor that can actually inflate a tire to 120psi. And if it can, it will take forever as the gas stations all use on demand compressors with a small or no reservoir.

Do you guys/gals that have Presta valves carry Schraeder/Presta converters so you can fill up at gas stations? I thought the gas station pumps couldn't pump to 90-120 psi since most car tires don't inflate past 60 psi.

Almost always. I rarely see a compressor with a coin slot.
Now, finding a compressor that actually works is another story.

The highest I've ever seen POSTED on a gas station compressor was like 90 psi... but that one in particular was actually unable to fill my CAR tire to 35 psi, so... Yeah I'd be really surprised if you could fill a road tire at a gas station.
And I've filled up in recent memory at a pump that dinged. Not every gas station has the fancy machines, every once in a while I come across one with an older setup.

Yep, just in case. I've used it on my MTB, but not yet on higher pressure tire. It doubles as my front stem cap.

Notice the sign on the gas pump? "Self Serving" instead of self service. Perfect! Ha ha ha! :)

Yep I keep one with me! caught a flat on the way to work and couldn't figure out a new pump that I got for XMAS. I had to walk past a gas station all the way back home to use my floor pump.

Who fills up bike tires at a gas station? This always puzzles me.
I recently saw a guy unload his road bike from the back of his pickup at the air compressor. I wondered, does he not have a pump of his own? Does he really drive his bike on truck to the gas station every time he needs more air? How can anyone 'survive' on a bike without owning a pump?

Locker definitely, one of the gas pumps at the stations I pass on the way to work? Probably. Sent on in emails to friends....definitely!
It seems most air hoses at the stations these days only go to 60 psi (a few at 80 psi). Back in the old days, gas stations also included auto repair bays with air operated tools and hydraulic lifts. They normally had much higher pressure compressors with an air tank(s) reservoir. With the lower quality rim beads back then and the higher air hoses, some people who were not careful did blow out their tubes. Hard to do these days.

I have had a couple of flats next to a station. Might as well use the air hose to fill it up to the pressure of the air hose and then fill the rest of the way with the hand pump. I never did think it was alot of fun using a mini-pump on the side of the road.
I do see your point of someone driving to a station though.

Sure if the coincidence of a flat by a station, why not. Save a cartridge or the hand pump work.

There are several free air stations in my area. None have complained when I took some air. I loved the old Two Wheel Transit Authority in Huntington Beach that had Schraeder and Presta hoses outside the shop available during all business hours.

I thought I was the only one that did this, take the bike to buy gas for the lawn mower, but I never get air from them for the bike. I trust the gauge on my floor pump much more than one on a gas station hose.:)

Hmmm. Last time I used a gas station pump, my only problem was that it could not get my tyre up to the pressure I wanted. Cars use 2-3 bar, truck and buses run 4-5. I run my 700C's at 7,5 bar (110 PSI or so) The pump gave in at 6 or so.
Compressors are dangerous for footballs, not bikes.

I use a small electric compresson for my bike and takes forever.
