Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - lube yer chain!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
really!! bike'll ride ever so much sweeter!:) :) :)
In the midwest here we've had several days of pretty much solid rain, which I rode in on a day or two of the mess to keep my sanity. I forgot to relube afterwards and had to ride for a day with the creakiest gritty-sounding chain I've ridden in a long time. I treated the chain right as soon as I got home, but my chain had elongated enough to feel too loose to me and I ended up sliding the rear axle back a bit this afternoon before I left work. So yeah, the bike rides silky smooth like a wet dream with a freshly cleaned and lubed chain, and neglecting it definitely speeds up wear!

Dirrty/rusty chain = bad. Clean well lubed chain = good. Often its the obvious stuff that I overlook.
just had two days of hard rain yesterday and the day before. the first couple of miles this morning were a little rough, until all of the crap got tossed off, then it was back to smooth sailing. that's purple extreme for you.

in other news adding common air can help tires protect your rims, and they even roll smoother that way! Can you believe it? Air....

people like me are the reason threads like this exist. just yesterday i was wondering why i bother to lube my chain. that was after i got bike grease all over my jeans while changing a tire. i guess maybe i'm an overzealous luber (you're not perverted, i thought about that one, too), or a lazy wiper, but i'm tired of having black goop all over everything all the time.
you're right, it's certainly not rocket science, it's just that every once in a while some real slow motherfukker like me comes along and needs to hear some common sense, and even then it's anyone's guess if he'll act like he's got some sense or not.

For the really big hills I hold my water bottle facing backwards and squeeze all the water out. It works like a jet engine and propels me to the top in no time.
