I know this won't fit into everyone's training plans, but I thought I'd suggest a challenge, for anyone who is interested, for the summer months: May, June, July, and August.

The challenge: Ride 1000 miles each month, for as many of those four months as possible!

I'm on my way with 29 miles for May already!! :D

Eh. Maybe one of the months. 750/month is probably doable but 1000 for all of those would upset the Local Management even further :(

Not impossible, I did just under 500 last month. But I'd really need to get myself up in endurance to double that :) I'm at 85 for May but I'm really beaten up!

I do 800/month in the summer anyway. I'm single, no gf at the moment, and spent all my money on bike crap. Man, I gotta get a life. :)

I did 1000 per month all year in 1990, was single then and had a much less demanding job schedule. Now it's about 500 or so.

Machka

Well, keep in mind .... it is only 32.3 miles per day. That's no more than 15 hours per week. :)

Two of them, as a matter of fact! :) I'll be putting in between 55 and 60 hours a week over the summer. (During the winter, I go to University full-time and work part-time.)

But I think of it like this:

A week is 168 hours. If I work 60 hours a week, that leaves me 108 hours. Suppose I sleep 50 hours a week, that leaves me with 58 hours to do other stuff! I could cycle 18 hours a week (for example) and still have a full 40 hours for housework, church, etc. :)

Very difficult for me currently. It's impossible for me to avoid all the hills around Portland -- too tempting. Therefore I would get waaaaay to beat up even though I know the daily average is doable.

Can we make some kind of "adjustment" to the challenge to include hours on the trainer? I ride as much as I can in the day, but sometimes it is just not possible, and riding at night around here is instant suicide.

1000 miles per month probably isn't a challenge for you is it?

It would be a slight increase from my 20 miles per day. But I think I can do it. I'll have the 400k and 600k brevets in June. That by itself will get me very close for one month!

I'm in! :)

Every year since 1997 I've had at least one 1000 mile month ... but this year, I haven't even reached 1000 miles yet since the beginning of the year!! This business of going to University is time consuming. So ... to motivate myself to get out there and get riding, I thought I'd make myself a little goal ... a 1000 mile May. :) I'll see about June later.

Trying to do this in Sept, as I shall be at home before Uni and not take my bike up until the summer term (not worth it between). I have only 250 miles on it so far so want at least 750!

that's not much of a challenge. now if you said 1,500 or 2,000, well that would be a challenge.

We'll see...it's race season so I can't put in the huge weekend miles.

I'll give it a shot! Matter of fact, I'll put it out to my Spinner Saturday crowd tomorrow, see if I can get all of us involved! That way we can post in a 13,000 mile graph at each month!

There are some people who have never done 1000 miles in a month, so I'm suggesting that it is a doable goal some might want to shoot for ... and some people who haven't really started cycling this season who might need the incentive to get out and ride more this month (me). :)

Hopefully in August I might be up to 1500 to 2000 miles, but I'll have to see.

Bagged 1000+ last month, but May might be tough because of the obligatory Memorial Day weekend backcountry skiing trip, which will mean a week with no riding (a week off from work is just a really, really long holiday weekend, right?).

I may have to do it in just a few rides: hopefully 200+ miles tomorrow at Calvin's, maybe a recovery century on Sunday if I can talk Mrs. Octopus into it. Next weekend is TOSRV, which'll get me 225 miles, and double that if I pull the trigger on riding it both ways on both days, instead of just both ways on the first day which is the current plan of action. Then the 300K on 5/20. Toss in the commuting miles and an after-work ride or two for each week.... Alright, I ought to make it.

Yes, I have a disease. More riding is the cure.

I will take up the challenge, but my favorite ride is less than 30 miles, but with about 3000 ft of ascent (and descent, that's why it is my favorite!). I'd have to do it everyday, at least once! 10 or so a day of commuting will help add it up....

I could dedicate the time and do 1000 miles this month but the resulting divorce would take up too much time in June to do another 100 miles.

Remember, it's only about 15 hours a week!

Or maybe she could join you on the rides! :)

But don't worry ... divorce is that time consuming. The lawyers take care of most of it for you, you've just got to sign a few things. :D

Maybe it's time to explore a few new routes!!!

One of the things I love about long distance cycling is the fact that I can explore. On the weekends where I'm not riding an event, I sit down with a map, pick a direction that I want to go, and plan out a route ... preferably one I have either never ridden before, or ridden quite some time ago.

I save the short loops for after work rides.

I'm at 649 for May, and 445 of that is two, non-stop rides!

Prospects for the grand are on life support, though. The 300K is this weekend which will help, but I'm off the bike for the rest of the month a week from tomorrow. Going to have to get in some good after work rides to make it happen. Wish these 50-degree temps and rain would take a hike. Don't mind this weather from October through March, but by mid-May, I'm ready to ditch the winter crap and break out the shorts and short-sleeve jerseys!

But what do you do for the challenge if you're up to 4700 miles for 2006 through May 15? I'm riding some stupid miles lately. And the part that amazes me is I'm not burning out. The more I ride the more I WANT to ride. I was doing 1000 miles per month in Jan/Feb/March. Now I'm doing more. I feel blessed to be able to have the time/flexibility to do that, believe me. The most I ever rode in a year was 9200 miles back in 1996 or 1997 when I was still racing. This year I'll exceed 12000 miles at this rate. But it's a day at a time for me. I don't worry about annual mileage goals.

I could say I need a life, but I have tried that, and frankly, this is better. I'm kidding of course, I have a wonderful family, a successful business. But riding is my passion. Some of you know my story (it's a long one) and I won't bore you with that soap opera. There's a zen quality to cycling that's hard to describe. And anybody who rides probably understands that.

But all that being said I don't know if I'll ever do some of the longer brevets Machka participates in. Although a good friend and I may well do this 640 mile/8 day charity event in California in November. Is that brevet material Machka? It's all just riding to me. Racing, riding, in the end we all share that passion, right? I'm a terminal roadie I'm afraid. But there IS some awesome MTB terrain around here. Gotta get into the woods sooner or later.

I'm not going to make it this month (only 260 so far) or next either :(

Spent a week off the bike due to healing injuries.
Next month I'm going to Europe for 2 weeks and access to bikes for long rides is going to be limited since I'm going siteseeing and bar hoping with friends.

A 640 mile/8 day event is getting there .... but our 1200K randonnee (750 miles) has a 3.5 day (90 hour) time limit. :)

I'm at 870 miles .... and pretty sure I'm not going to make it for May. I just finished my 400K brevet and my knees took a beating on that one. I will try to get out on Monday though to see how close I can get! :D

However, even if I don't quite make it for May, there's always June .... already this challenge has motivated me to get out there more often, and I'm back on track for my annual mileage! :)

Not even close here. 716 so far and prospects of riding the next few days are looking dim; I'll be lucky to break 800. June and July should have more opportunities.

I am sitting at 1129 mi and I am shooting for 1270 mi (my personal best) which means a couple more metrics after work before thursday. I like to try for one 2000k + month each year and will probably do another month of 1000+ miles but realisticaly, 1000k per month is a fairly easy goal to attain and doesn't take away from my other daily activities.

05-28-06, 10:16 PM
I don't keep track of my miles each month, but I mut have done at least 1000 in May. I've been doing 200-300 mile weeks and I rode 220 miles just this weekend.

I ended up with 873 miles for the month. Rides ranged from the commute to/from work (14 miles total) to some century and near century rides on the weekend. I should be able to do 1000 in June. It really is good to have a mileage goal - thanks for the idea.

I tried, I really tried, but between wife, work, and other activities, I was only able to complet 602 miles for the month of May. It is my biggest milage month yet. I will see if I can get that 1000 mile month for June. Even if I never get it, it is fun trying:D

Only got 931 miles for May, but I did get in 3 days of backcountry skiing! :D

Disaster aside, getting the grand in June should be doable for me. On tap is 150 this weekend, 250 (a 400K) next weekend, 450 (a 24-hour race) the weekend after that, and perhaps 380 (a 600K) on the last weekend of the month. Chuck in the usual commuting and an after-work ride or two a week, and maybe I can hit 2K for the month!
