I was reading a crazyguybike journal and the girl said everyone asked about the tan circles on her hands. Do people ask you?

When people see my tan circles they avert their eyes in silent horror. After years of therapy, I've learned to live with the shame and heartbreak.

I got the "dot tan" last Sunday. It was a beautiful day here in NYC, so I decided to put some miles on my newly acquired Trek 520 (10 years old, but it's new to me. Thanks, Tom!). I was wearing some old pretty low-tech gloves -- leather padded palm, mesh back. At the end of the day, after a shower and a change of clothes, I got together with some friends for dinner. A few of them asked what was wrong with my hands. Lots of little dots all over the backs. It took me a minute to realize what had happened.

Tell 'em it's pigmentosa curiosa. It's benign, non-contagious and correlated with (choose one or more):

Exceptionally high IQ;
Very high sexual performance;
ESP;
General overachievement;
Whatever other BS you can think of.

My Rolex is big enough to cover the one on my left hand, and everyone thinks the one on the right is a seasonal birthmark.

I've got that as well. It looks like I have cornrows in my skin.

I hope all you single cyclists out there realise you now have a new way to spot potential partners off the road. Check the back of their hands and then try to guess what kind of bike they have. If a chick tried that line on me I would be so impressed I would be willing to sleep with them there and then.

I was on a shuttle bus in Yosemite some years back and had significant bike glove tan marks. A little girl saw it and asked her mom what was wrong with my hands. Her mother pointed out that I was a cyclist and the marks were from gloves. Other than that one time, no one really notices.

Nice to know there are still some true gentlemen willing to make a noble sacrifice.

It isn't "Dot Tan". These are known as "Badges" and everyone used to get them before the advent of Lycra gloves.

It means you are probably using cotton crochet gloves like a real bike rider.

It's the brown badge of courage.
