Commuting - I think I've converted my Boss!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This morning at about mile 5 of my 13 mile ride I passed my boss pulling out of his driveway. He beeped his horn as he accelerated past me in his Ford Explorer. About thirty minutes later I arrived at work and found that he was not yet there.
When he arrived a few minutes later he couldn't believe that I'd beat him to the office. On the spot he decided that he's putting in an employee shower, and that starting monday he's riding in to the office as well. I think I'm going to offer to stop by his house on monday morning just to make sure that the temptation of the SUV doesn't get the better of him.
That's great! Just make sure you encourage him and tell him how easy it is to get started bike commuting. The biggest hurdle for me was just getting out on the bike and into the roadway - I was afraid of how hard it'd be or how much time it'd take. Now that I'm commuting about 4 times a week, it's not a big deal at all. Sure, it was physically hard at first, but I've gotten stronger very quickly and now it's almost easier than driving!

Just don't beat him to work so easily at first... so he won't get discouraged ! LOL
Remember, that first day as you both pull out of his driveway and accelerate towards work, drop him like a dishrag and be sure to give him 'the look'.
If hes the boss he's most likely competitive, thats how he made it to beign the boss :)

LOL.
I love this idea. However, if you don't think it'll work, I'd ride with him for the first week or so to encourage him. Then do what Jarery suggests :D

Buy your boss an encouragement kit (mini pump, spare inner, levers and patch kit). Let him know that he can call you on your cell for a free flat service at least once. Encourage him for the first two weeks by riding with him and so on.
After that declare open season on his lardy ass and teach him the you're never to old to be taken to school.

Very tempting..... I think I'll have to give being supportive a try first, but the first time he give me lip at the office.....
It's funny how many people in our office have expressed an interest in riding in. Our office is mostly men, so it can get pretty competitive around here, I'm sure that has something to do with it.

No way, let him draft off of you. Bring extra waterbottles and bannanas in case he needs them. If he has a flat, have your tools in hand to get that tire changed before he even realizes it. Then just sit back and wait for the year end bonus...

Exactly. Get his wife to comment on how much you've improved his health, good looks, etc. too :D.

Can your boss ride 8 miles twice a day? For people jumping on an old, unused bike after years of neglect, 8 miles is pretty far. He'll be sweating like a pig w/in the first mile. Make sure you share your wet wipes w/ him until he gets his own.

Note, the boss said he was putting in a shower at work. Looks like the OP is already getting a mid-year bonus.

Great. If he likes bike commuting you can convince him into promoting bike commuting among employees by pointing out that commuting by bike increases employees productivity. I think I read that somewhere on the Internet.

Now Mr. BOSS has two options how to become the fastest commuter in the office. First option involves hard training for a few years, gallons of sweat, tears and blood. The second options involves two words spoken from a leasurely position behind his desk.
