Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Friend and I just finished building a bike...somethings wrong

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So my friend just built up a single speed fixed gear from scratch. Its a sweet bike, but something seems a little weird. I have ridden a racing bike and it seems that on those you are able to rest your legs. I mean that if you arent pedaling the pedals can rest. On his bike those things are always going, with no way to rest and just coast.

Also, on the one I rode when you backpedal is actually slows the bike. On his new one it wont brake, it is literally like pushing backwards on something with alot of momemtum, and its kind of hard, and doesnt seem safe at all.

I hope someone understands me, I dont know bikes real well but this just seems to not be right.

THanks!

SSFG?
Probably left the DR on for tension.
Resistance is the result when the flywheel rubs the FW or FH.

Enjoy

yeah, check the LRs on your BB and RH. Its probably not a HS problem so focus on your DT. Maybe there aren't enough SPs in your MB?

Your question is SO.... I don't know what to say.... is it a joke? Yikes. If you built up a fixed gear without knowing that you would not be able to 'stop pedaling' then you really have no idea what a FIXED GEAR bike is. No offense, but you may need to read up on fixed gear bike basics. Your bike sounds like it actually works the way it is supposed to work.. like it or not.

It simply looks like he didn't realize the bike would be a fixed gear. Believe it or not most people (forum members here excluded for obvious reasons) believe riding a fixed gear bike is crazy and dangerous.

I think your spokes need to be retensioned. Bring it in to your LBS and let them know you want a full tune up.

How can you go through the trouble of building a fixed gear bike without understanding what it is.

I'm curious to know what you did...did you thread a track cog on the rear hub? Weld the freewheel..what? How did you rig it so the pedals can't stop moving?

Maybe the bike has reversible rear hub and they didn't realize it.

Pathdoc, we realize you got jerked around a little bit. We're sorry.

Its all cool. I love bicycles and I'm not about to let a few people ruin something I really love.:)

I'm also shocked you got it right and the thing works without knowing what the end result should be. So many people have had all kinds of problems getting chain line right and so on, and you guys throw it together, metaphorically blindfolded. Cheers, man. What's the expression.... get enough monkeys together in front of typewriters all typing away for an infinite amount of time and eventually one will bang out War And Peace......

gfrance: I'm willing to bet my life that that bike* does have serious problems with chainline, bearing adjustment, untightened screws, loose cog/lockring (if applicable...) etc. It just hasn't fallen apart yet.

*if we accept that it exists, which I don't

ok, in the event this is not a joke...
if you were trying to build a fixed gear bike, then nothing is wrong. If you did not realise this was the case here is some reading to get you going and help avoid getting stomped for asking newbie questions.

Yeah, um, I just finished building this boat, thing is, whenever the wind stops blowing, I stop. What gives? Do I have to re-tension my sail?

I think so, I can't figure out if the mast is semi-horizontal. It's a conversion, used to be a tractor.
