Bicycle Mechanics - Dish detergent as degreaser for chain cleaning?

Anyone tried this? Dish detergent is supposed to remove grease from plates, etc...

It works. Not as well as citrus-based degreaser, but I've used it.

If all you have handy is a CVS, get rubbing alcohol. 95% is better than 70%. Not for use while it's on the bike, but good for the wash in a bottle thing.

Spray it with citrus cleaner and then put it in the dishwasher. Works pretty good. It is a very dangerous procedure, however, its been known to lead to divorce.

I use mineral spirits in a Park chaincleaner. I also use a toothbrush to get off the grime the cleaner doesn't get to. When I'm done with that I wipe the chain dry with a clean cotton rag. I let it dry. When it's dry, it's dry to touch and won't leave marks on a white cloth. I then use a light oil then wipe the chain again so it's mostly dry. The oil is in the links where it needs to be at this point. The main thing is the cleaning gets all the abrasive grime off that wears things down. Everyone has their own religion where it concerns how they clean and lube their chain. This happens to be mine.

Also, since we all obviously own keyboards, I can report that you can put all the nonelectronic components of a keyboard in the dishwasher. You would not believe the smutz that accumulates in the key mechanism.

I just purchased an ultrasonic cleaner. I'll let you know if it works with dishwashing detergent as soon as it arrives. I hope this thing is worth the money.

Just out of curiosity, where does one find such beasties and how much do they cost?

I bought mine at Harbor Freight, on sale for about $25. Keep in mind that the 'sonic' cleaner sold at walmart is not a true ultrasonic cleaner like one at HF. We use it to clean bearings, but I may have to try it with chain if it will fit in pan. I also use paper coffee filters so I can re-use cleaners a few times before tossing.
