Bicycle Mechanics - campy group help

I purchased a used bike (Trek 2200, carbon tubes w/ alum lugs,about 6 years old) It has an 8 speed campy group but I can't tell what group it is. It only has "Brev" on it as far as I can see. I think Bev is short for the Italian word for patent. Can anyone help me identify which campy group this is and approx age??? Thanks

Campagnolo released several 8 speed gruppos such as Record, Chorus, Mirage, Croce D Aune, and Athena. There are more.

I did a quick search of Trek 2200s and found that all of the discussions were about bikes equipped with Shimano hardware. So your bike was likely outfitted with Campy by a Local Bike shop or a previous owner.
There also seems to be quite a bit of discussion of Trek models from 1999 being recalled so you may want to follow up with that to see if the bike you own is affected by a recall notice.

Are the gear shifters plastic or Al?
Is there a small metal band around the hub grease port?
The gruppo name is usually on the derailleurs and the front of the shifters.

Judging from the Crankset, its not RECORD. (5 arm spider) But it could be Chorus, Athena, or Croce. Its not Mirage as the ergolevers for that group were different.

The bike is currently in transit and the OP will get up close pictures of it as soon as it arrives.

Not necessarily. For one year in the mid or late 90's Trek factory spec'ed one of their carbon-tubed/Al-lugged frames with a Campy group (Athena I believe) more as a protest to Shimano's dominance than anything else.

They ran into problems because Campy wasn't used to providing OEM components to such a large scale manufacturer and couldn't provide the necessary volume and on-time delivery. The experiment ended part way through the model year when Trek threw in the towel and built up the remaining bikes with Shimano components.

I remember seeing this particular bike in a couple of bike shops (when it was a current model) built with both Campy and Shimano groups. When I asked why, that's what I was told.

Those black gear levers look like plastic-coated steel, not Al so probably a lower end group.
