I have an 18 speed bike. with shimano derailleur and grip shift. I know the back derailure is out of whack.. Meaning the cable is out of adjustment, and it is bent.. It will somtimes jump a gear, and it will not adjust to where it will shift right. I can hear chain noise as it goes through the derailleur. Should I try to un bend and adjust? Or just buy a new one?? And could some one explain the proper way to adjust gears?? I can't afford to pay some one to put on a new one, so if I get a new one I need to know how to adjust it.. I have never been taught the proper way to do it. Thanks again..

There are inexpensive maintenance and repair books.Bicyclings and Zinn being just two.There is also how to do it at www.parktool.com and Sheldon Brown has articles on deralier adjustment at www.harriscyclery.com Sometimes a deralier can be bent back right,sometimes you make it worse or bend the hanger.Sometimes better to bite the bullet and buy a new inexpensive one.

Snapper, if you know your derailure is bent, don't bother trying to fix it. It isn't a job for a beginner, and it is a hassle for pros.

Well after tinkering some more I got it to where it will shift pretty good.. Trying to adjust my gears while the bike was up side down was my problem. Hung it by the seat and got it good enough to get me by till I get a new deraileur.. I also had to un bend it a little, and your right un bending one is an art.. This sight is full of good info....

Here are the two definitive websites for rear and front derailluer adjustment. This is what they teach in the Park Tools School. During the school it is emphasized that to do the job correctly, you must follow the procedures, in order , from start to finish. Once the derailluers are set up and working correctly, then just basic adjustments are needed.

So if you're not sure what to do, start from the beginning, and do the job completely. That way you know that everything is correct and proper.
