was skatin' down riverside park this mornin' and this dude was pedalin' along with his kid and i did a freakin' doubletake when i saw his chainring. dude was rockin' a ****in' huge gear. i caught up with him and aksed him about it. dude was about 55 or 60 and rockin' a 72t chainring! sh!Tfire!!! frame was a powdercoated gunmetal bianchi pista. i aksed how he climbed and he said it was mostly for ridin' in central park.

all dap to this old dude (especially since his kid looked about 7):)

Did he look fit? It almost sounds like more ignorance than anything else, as that huge a gear means you're spinning really slow, ergo it might just be for him to relax with his kid. I just can't see any reason for that other than chillin or a speed record.

i think I saw the same guy in CP a few weeks ago. Dark haired skinny guy, with a somewhat unhappy look to his face. Looks like he's seem some **** in his time? At least that's what the guy I saw made me think.

22t cogs are readily available from EAI and Surly, and I'm sure someone out there makes bigger ones. 72/22 would be about 86 gear inches with a 700c road tire, which isn't that extreme. On the other hand, 72/13 is about 145 gear inches. yikes.

Wasn't a speed record set on a stripped-down track bike with an 80 or so tooth ring one time back in the day? I remember seeing a picture of it sitting in a museum somewhere in this forum.

That Cinelli tandem moonlights at Cyclesmithy on occassion, no? They also have a flaming pink one there that Tristan would drool over (matching DW and track tandem)

Wow! 72T is quite large! I'm impressed! But the real question here is what in the world possessed you to go
skatin' down riverside park this mornin' ...?

(Unless by skatin' you meant riding your fixed just gliding along as if you were on skates and not inline skating.)

that dude is prolly the guy from toga bikes, although i thought that was an 80-something chainring.
riding a huge gear slowly on occassion is good for your stroke, just as riding a ridiculously light gear once in a while is good for you.
