I noticed the jacket on my cable for the rear shift is splitting. So basicly if i buy a new rear derailleur I will need to fix this too. So since my grip shifts are in great shape, can I just replace the cable?? Thanks for the help..

Yes.
You can replace the cable and housing without replacing the shifter.

Yea you can replace the cable but its a bîtch to change a cable in a grip shift.

Depends on the model...I'm using Rockets and it's no worse than STI. They have a nice little flap that opens to simplify matters.
yeah you get that sticky lube stuff on your hands, and some models are harder to take apart than others;)
