Any recommendations from you folks? What should I look for?

I''m not even sure whats out there besides the standard major brands, ie: LeMond, Bianchi, Specialized, Kona, Redline, Ridley, Empella (some of which are out of my budget). And now Trek XO1.

I'd like to find a used frame. Anybody have a 56cm?

I rode a Schwinn singlespeed conversion last year and it whooped me.

Need to build up a "real" cross bike soon!

Any help appreciated.

OK, I'll bite. You need to be a little more specific about what kind of riding you are going to do: CX racing, commuting, touring, offroad, club rides. You like your Schwinn, but why? Are there any qualities that you liked that you want to see in your CX bike? Then, I'm sure, that others will chime in...

I like my Surly Cross Check. You can use it for anything. I threw mine at a loud neighbor last night. Is there anything this thing can't do?

CX racing. I like the Schwinn because it's stiff, snappy and tracks well. Steel frame and fork.

I looked at the Cross Check. Must be the cool factor. Don't make the red anymore. Soma's is close.

sfcrossrider- was it heavy enough to seriously hurt your neighbor while being light enough to race with?

I'm not neccessarily looking for a "do it all" bike. There's a ton of bikes out there. And that's my difficulty. Narrowing it down to "the one".

I'd buy a Litespeed Appalachian frame if I could find one. Not made anymore.

Well, I own a Specialized Tricross Comp. Always pimpin' it but I don't race. And it's not steel. If you got the cash, IF would be sweet. And if they start making them with 953 steel, break out the credit card...

don't get a trek x01

one stick in the rear derailleur (or der in spokes) and the replaceable
der hanger will stay intact and rip the dropout apart instead.

I know...I did it. the replaceable part that is supposed to shear off
took my dropout apart instead. poor design. in a slappy cross race
you could end up with no bike.

I'd buy another one if I had to.

Get what you can afford. If you like steel buy steel. If you want a lighter bike buy aluminum. hunt on ebay everyday or so to see what pops up there.

I see lets bash Treks on this fourm. I love my xo1 Its a 2006 bouth in the fall of 2005 as soon as the new ones were out. its been riden as a cross bike its had ligts put on it and rode the the dark winter nights. Noiw its being used as a road bike with bontrager race lighst on it. In another month Im going to tour on it. So please tell wahts wrong witn it? Is it possiable you just got a bad frame?

Buy the Lemond, its the best. I ride it and it goes fast. Steel is so real that you wouldnt believe it.

see, everyone likes what they have! get out there and check some out, see what YOU like!! theyre all good bikes (not sure if the Trek frame thng was an isolated case, Im sure Trek wouldnt let a condition like that live very long) so deside some basic things (how much you can spend, what mateerial you like, etc.. ) then narrow it down and BUY BUY BUY!!

seriously, for me, the Poprad was a great combo of not uber-race stripped, made in USA, and good components for $$. I gave it a triple and use it or everything.
