When I was watching OLN yest. I kept seeing little black, or white boxes on the lower rear chain stay.

are they weight, or a power sensor? My initial guess would be a power sensor, but I have never seen such a bland shaped sensor before.

It's a gps timming chip.

Yep. It keeps exact location of all riders at all times, so even in a group finish, you know who is in what place.

Yeah, GPS unit and transponder for speed and HR for TV. They show real-time HR and speed data on RAI. They did this at TDF last year as well. I wish they showed gear ratios in real time, I'm going blind trying to figure it out from the video.

A few years ago, they had real-time video camera on Cipo's bike hanging from the top tube-amazing footage of sprints. The UCI is thinking of putting these cameras on some TDF riders, with a special weight dispensation.

When did riders start having these on their bikes, and do the team managers have a direct link that shows who is in a break away etc. by the GPS tracking chip?

Wow, I know for the TDG, and TDC they kept showing different rider's HR. But it seemed that almost EVERYONE had one on their bike for the first road stage of the Giro.

Everyone has to have the transponder -this is how they are scored.

Those are used to keep track of everyone and general placings in a bunch finish. But humans and cameras are still used if there's a question or photo finish.

Sometimes, a rider will change bikes with a domestique and cause some confusion. I believe they were used in the Tour De France for the first time in 2004 and furnished by AMB Activ. In stage 17 of the 2004 Tour a Cofidis rider had to abandon when he was trying to adjust his timing sensor while riding, and cut his fingers in his spokes.

GPS is not that accurate. If two riders are within inches of each other, a simple GPS device would be 10-100 feet off, so there would be no way to tell who won solely on GPS data alone.

GPS are pretty accurate... the government acutal scrambles the signal in garmin GPS units so they ar not super accurate and could be used by terrorist for bombs. But I agree that they can not be that accurate to tell who came in within a couple inches. There purpose is more of a novality, as well as group finishes where everyone gets the same time anyways.

It's not a GPS device at all. It's a radio transmitter that works off of a wire across the road at the start, finish line and antennas along the course.

I drew this quick illustration :)

Yeah, we used to have to use them. We had people doing lap scoring too but 40 odd racebikes at high speed is just too much to keep track of.
Races are won and lost by 1/100th of a second.
Mine weren't nearly as purdy as the bicycle ones though:

I do remember that but I didn't remember it was this years tour winner. :D

He ended up just cutting it off.

Hey, I didn't recognize the Tower! Wonder why they painted it in the funny yellow color instead of white like the beautiful marble that it is made from?

The problem is that the drive side is facing the wrong way, and he doesn't have his chain on the big ring. Has Simoni never posted a photograph on Bike Forums before? Sheesh. ;)

So it would pay off to start at the back and finish at the front.....

A couple seconds here and there.....

Right?

NASCAR puts the transponders on the fuel cells, just behind the rear differential.

If I were one of the riders, I would put it up as close to the front of the chainstay as possible.

It doesn't matter. The only way that would make a difference is in a sprint. Sprints (at least the first few people contesting the time bonus) are still scored by a finish-line camera.

These are used for determining quickly and easily what group all of the riders were in (as in lead group, or the +0:01:20 group, or the +0:20:43 group...).

I hear the new Cervelo R3 Bayonne is made entirely of duct tape.

Better not do Paris-Roubaix with it then. All those cobbles - the dang thing'll explode!
