Just wondering what stems you guys are using. I saw that incredible one made by Coast bicyles.
What are you using? I'd like to find a nice chrome track stem.

I have a cinelli bar/stem combo that looks like the coast one. I also have a nitto jaguar on my other bike

i try to get stems that are appropriate for the bike... if i was using bullhorns I would just drop in a nice road stem.

Cinelli Grammo Pista. Ugly as sin by itself, but looks surprisingly good in this weird masculine/angular way when on the bike. Just posted this in the pics thread, but I likey:

My road conversion has a Cinelli 1A stem w/Nitto bullhorns. A simple, elegant stem, imo.

This is an interesting old Frech stem.

I'm running an SR quill stem; 110mm or so. It's holding down a set of really nice SR touring bars. My roadie, of course, is different due to the threadless forks, but my fixie is threaded baybee! :)

I gots a 110mm ITM ChroMo stem. 1" threadless 25.4mm clamp diameter. (I love how the clamp, and steerer diameters are the same but are expressed in inches on one end and mm on the other). It was $10 new, it's stiff enough, light enough, and fits without any shims on either end. In other words it looks pretty boring, but works perfectly. Attaching handlebars to forks is a boring job, but somebody has to do it. :p
P.S. I lust those fancy Coast, and Jonny Cycles hand brased quill stems.

kludge - i used to have one of those and found them to be noticably flexy. hows it treating you?
damn stiff. its semi vintage(most likely from the 80's) so i dunno if that has anything to anything. i like it, but i also hate it because im always freaking out about losing the hex bolt cap. other that its tits. (just dont try to change the bars!)
I just got my 3t mutant. Looks really nice. I wanted something that would make it easy to switch between drops and bullhorns.

The swine comment was an attempt at humor, not an insult. Chill.
I'm rocking a nice old 80mm 3ttt stem that I picked up at the Bike Church for a mere $3.

The Coast stem I wanted so badly is $225. Of course it's 100% handmade and I'm sure very very nice. Its just more than I'm willing to spend. I found a nice used Nitto for $30.

My road bike has a very nice looking 3ttt. Those are sleek.
if you are a doctor.....225 is not much to sneeze at. OW! PUN PUN!.
ok seriously. ride your bike.

Notice I said I wasn't willing to spend that much for a stem. I didn't say I couldn't afford it. There is a difference.

Why not have a stem that is worth 70% of your bike?
p.s. If you noticed, I was also making a joke, I called your motebecane awesome.....

I thought that was clever sarcasm. These parts will ultimately end up on a new custom made Bob Jackson. I'm finalizing plans for the Jackson this week through World Class Cycles. It will take 12 weeks for the frame to be built. I'll ditch the Moto when the new Jackson arrives.

pathdoc - not to second guess you or anything, but you've only had the motobecane for like what.. a week? and you're already considering a custom? That seems pretty silly. I remember seeing somewhere you posted you wanted something that rode like your road bike, but the whole fun of getting a track frame is that its a different ride, for a different purpose. Perhaps you might want one of their street track geometry bikes, or a full on track geometry. Those angles make a lot of difference. I just think you might be rushing into things a bit faster than need be, and spending money unnecessarily. But i guess since doctors make a lot more than me you've got a bit more fun money than I to play with.
And while im thinking about it, are you still on the freewheel side?
Just thoughts.

I hear ya. I'm really in love with the concept on the singlespeed but like the geometry of my road frame.
I'm thinking of having a single speed version of this bike made with very ornate lugs. Again I'll give it a few days to insure I'm buying something that will work for me for years to come.

I recommend you try out track geometry... I used to have a road conversion and I loved the thing to death, thought it rode like a charm... but after I tried a few other frames I realized that I much prefer the quicker handling and more agressive geometry of track. Also you can find some pretty stupidly ornate frames (like mine) on ebay for a lot less than a custom. That white one I posted was only 450.
If i were you and wanted to upgrade I'd scour ebay/craigslist for a nicer frame, move your parts over from the motobecane, and then slowly upgrade it bit by bit. Then I might think about a custom.

Yes I did say that but I still think $225 for a single part is steep. I figured it would be maybe $125-150 max. Still it is beautifully made and I may feel different by the time my Jackson is ready.
Hey Kludge I totally understand the poor student syndrome. I lived in an unairconditioned dorm for 3 years while at LSU in Baton Rouge. Those were some lean years. Where do you live? What state?

I would like to take this opportunity to 1) implore the Salsa corporation to make a chrome version of the SUL quill stem and 2) implore the Nitto corporation to offer the alloy version of the jaguar stem in 65° as well as 58°, like they do for the steel version. Thanks for your time.

Nitto makes a steel Jaguar?
mcatano
05-08-06, 07:56 PM
Yeah, and it only costs about 2x what the alloy one costs. The plus side is that it's stiffer and comes in your choice of two different angles - 58° (like the aluminum version), and 65° (slightly steeper than a Pearl/your average road stem).

i'm using a no-name alloy stem on my threadless fork. i've got a habit of changing stems (and bars, and overall riding position) frequently so the less-than-hip threadless setup is a blessing.
