Decided to make this a new thread rather than posting at the bottom of the banana one because it's a significant nutritional breakthrough and I don't want it to get lost...
OK, that's a little strong. But I read recently that low-fat chocolate milk, available in every convenience store on the planet, is an excellent mid-ride drink. It has the right balance of calories, carbs and protein, helps with hydration, is easily digested by most people and costs about 79 cents for a little carton.
I didn't ride at all from mid-Jan until mid-April, so I'm starting pretty far in the hole this year. I've made a couple of 7-Eleven stops on my so-called "long" rides this spring, and so far chocolate milk seems to work fine.
If you're lactose-intolerant, it might still be worth a try. According to my physician riding buddy, many people who "can't handle dairy" can manage small quantities. Doesn't seem to bother me
Also, peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread, with or without a little jelly, are a tasty high-energy snack that costs next to nothing and can ride in a jersey pocket for a couple of hours without significant loss of quality.

Velo....an interesting idea. I love the stuff. Yet where I ride there just aren't many stores of any kind to buy it. It would be convenient to carry those little, no need to refridgerate cartons with me....but the taste of "warm" chocolate mile...........maybe no worse than warm cytomax. Worth a road test. I would be interested in anyone else's experience/speculation. I'd sort of dismissed the idea of taking mile product on a ride.

My only initial concern would be the "thick spit" effect.

This stuff will change your life. Often available in the peanut butter section of the grocery store.

It will make you irresistble to women and will give you the virility of a 19-year-old. Of course, I do get accused of lying a lot.

Seriously, it tastes great, doesn't have any trans fats and can stay in your pack all day without complaint. It's good with peanut butter, on bread, on fruit or scooped right out of the jar. I first saw it 20 years ago in Europe as a favorite among the hosteling crowd. It was made solely in Italy at the time, but now it's made in America as well.

I am SERIOUSLY into consuming
MASS QUANTITITES of Whey Protein Powder
and even recently bought a 44 lb. bag of the
stuff from Supplement Direct on the Internet.
Lowest per lb price I have ever found, even
cheaper per pound than the 5 lb tubs at
Sam's Club.

Chocolate Milk with a couple of BIG scoops
of whey protein powder in a blender and
you'd be good to go. I live on the stuff
and it keeps this old (former fat) fart
trim and fit as a fiddle!

I am gonna have one right now, and call
it dinner! AS FOR BANANA'S.... I thrive
on the POTASSIUM boost that a couple
of bananas gives me. And a few carbs
and a diet coke or a Power Bar GEL with
Double Caffeine buzz and I am good to go!
