Went for my first real ride today 1 month post-op for knee surgery. Decided to wear my heart rate monitor, something I never really did B4. I rode about 17 miles and averaged 15mph. Pretty flat ride and little wind to speak of. I noticed that my heart rate was b/t 150-165 most of the ride. I'm 41 years old, (6'02" 270), so my max rate (80 %) should be about 143 right?? My question is, if I'm over the 80 % point, am I getting an benefit to the ride?? Should I be slowing down to a lower heart rate. I didnt feel bad or like I was overdoing it. I concentrated on spinning faster in an easier gear. thanks

The old formula for determining your maximum heart rate (220 – age), is at best a rough guess. Your max heart rate could actually be lower or higher. I am not sure what your exact training goals are but my recommendation is to check out the “2x20 Anaerobic threshold test” thread at the top of this forum and do some research on the web for heart rate zone training. Do a google search for “lactate threshold training” or heart rate training and you will get lots of good info.
