I need to buy a crank remover to work on a bike I just got at a yard sale (loose bottom bracket, cotterless cranks). It has a square crank hole, but obviously if I am going to buy this thing, would like it to be as versatile as possible, since this is not the only bike I own. Would the park Tools CWP-6 fill the bill on being able to work on all cotterless cranks?

That will work with square tapered or splined cranks, so yeah, you should be good to go.

If the bike was factory assembled like mine, the tool may prove to be futile. I bought the Park CWP 5 and it didn't work on the drive side of the crank set. The threads in the crank arm stripped. The stripped because the factory didn't apply any grease to the spindle.

Just beware, the tool may not pull those cranks. I had to resort to buying an automotive steering wheel puller to get the chainring side crank off the spindle. It was not a pretty sight.

Having said that, the tool is now owned and will serve in the future on bike parts that I personally assemble.

All this to replace a crappy bottom bracket on a department store mtb.

Grease on a square taper spindle is a no-no. If it is tough to get off, boiling water over the crank as you are removing will expand the crank sufficiently to free it.
