Bicycle Mechanics - quick question: cone wrench sizes

i'm buying some cone wrenches from an online retailer. i need to know what size and how many i should get. i have deore hubs front and back on my Trucker. if i want to rebuild the hubs, what do i need? i've done it before, but just don't remember what i used. i just found the right wrenchs lying around the office i used to work at.

All the hubs I have use a 13 mm cone wrench for the front hub and a 15 mm cone wrench for the rear hub and you usualy only need one of each size as you can hold the other end with an ordinary spanner in most situations but check your hubs anyway. Actualy I've just taken a look at a set of hubs I have that I haven't built up yet and with them you would need two cone spanners to adjust them. There are other sizes out there too so the usualy advise to measure and see.

They vary. The 105 and older Ultegra hubs I've worked on require a 13 mm cone wrench in front and a 15 mm cone wrench for the rear hub cones. The locknuts are 17 mm but they can use a conventional box or open end wrench.

Newer Dura Ace and Ultegra hubs use a 13 mm and 14 mm for the front hub and both have to be cone wrenches. They also use two 14 mm cone wrenches for the rear hubs.

What to buy? To cover all eventualities buy 1x13 mm, 2x14 mm, 1x15 mm and have a conventional 17 mm wrench around.

Yup, some campys use 14mm.

I don't know if thet are still around but years ago I was able to find double-ended Park cone wrenches in a 13/14 mm and 15/16mm. With these two cone wrenches I was able to service just about any hub.

If Hillrider is correct about the Dura-Ace and Ultegra hubs, you'd be SOL with only one 13/14mm. And the fact that the rears require two 14mm cone wrenches---well these companies are constantly finding new ways to get us to spend more money.

Need? Yes, but it is a LOT easier if you have two 13s (or whichever size your front hub uses...those are the usual sizes.)
