Touring - bad guys out there

i had a trek 520 with panners stolen,cable cut, and now im screwed, everything i owned is gone.i was in kentucky on the discovery trail heading west to colorado. the bike is black with red lettering and ortlieb panners front and rear. please watch for it. watch yourselves out there!! thanks zeke e mail is bikerrednecktoughstuff!hotmail.com.

How sad. It's incredible how you can't ride anything nice out there unless it looks like a rusting wreck.

Stealing bicycles is one of humankind's lowest attributes! I feel your pain, I've had at least 7 stolen, but two of them came back! Don't give up hope!

It would help if this was reported via the above link and let other Trail users know to take additional precautions. They might even have some suggestions on tracking down the bike through local contacts, etc.

I try not to let my bike out of my sight. My cable is one of those thickly woven , multi-stranded cables. About a quarter inch thick.. Those are easily cut through?

One of the worst thefts, I ever remember reading of. Some tourers riding through Big Sur, Calif. They locked up their bikes with a thin cable , I guess.
they went on some trail. On the way back, just a little too far away. Saw some thugs cutting the cable. Too far away to get a good id.. anyway, the creeps waved at the owners, as they were returning. The owner watched as they ******** put the bike in a pick up truck. be careful.

That's the most depressing news I've heard for a while. I hope the thiefs get caught and you get your bike and stuff back.

Cable locks are the worst biking idea in history. They do nothing but give you a false since of security. All cable locks are super easy to cut through and just about everyone(especially thieves) know it.

It really upsets me that someone's dream and effort are trashed by some low life!!!!!!

I truly hope that you can find some attentive ears and help from the local police, maybe the paper, Television station, radio to get the word out and that they catch the theif and you get your bike and equipment back.

As a side note. I have elected to use a nice new heavey duty U Lock with a cable for the front wheel. However, if it isn't attached to something solid they will just load the whole thing in the back of a pickup and they are gone in seconds!

no spoof lost bike, leaving tomorrow to hitch to colorado. have receipts for bike and panners when purchaced. just put message out to maybe somebody might see the bike. thanks for your reply zeke

We can offer our support in any number of ways. How about we offer something a bit more material and concrete?

I am willing to ship SBu$*y AKA zeke a MSR stove where it would reach him, which I am sure he can pick up cannisters for where he is.

I have requested contact information for S B aka Zeke. I will send him a MSR Stove that uses cannisters.

I have also asked if he has been in contact with the local police, bike shops, etc.

It would not hurt for him to contact a local radio station and ask them to announce the need for the return of his equipment. I might just try myself.

I beleive he's near us as the Trail goes right through Cincinnati. I've sent a private email to see if we can do anything.

I'd have some things I'd gladly send but I'm outta here shortly to head to NM for a crash investigation course. Also, I would get some kind of confirmation of the tour and theft. Anyone in this position should have filed a report with the Police.

I had a guy try that on me on a trail in WV. I came up behind him. I was luck I had a pistol. You should have seen him when the gun went off. He actually pissed his pants and started crying. I should have busted a cap in him but I don't think he will try to steal a bike again.

I've always been tempted to carry. At they very least it would help with the rottie coming down on me. However, in the end, I figure its a bad idea. Seemed to work well for you though :)

It seems everyone who tours in KY has experienced something nasty. Myself included, although it wasn't theft. On the other hand, I also met some wonderful Kentuckians. Regardless, anyone touring eastern KY should not let their guard down.

A local in a tiny KY town (I forget the name) warned me to watch my bike at all times because thievery was rampant---because drug use was rampant there. Especially prescription "get high" drugs.
