Matthias Kessler fell off the back and cost T-Mobile a couple of seconds.

Well Basso has a some time to work with against the major contenders in the mountains. Simonni and Cunego lost over a minute to him and Savoldelli isn't going to be a big factor on the big climbs. It will be interesting to see if Danielson is for real or not.

so you are suggesting that it's probably Basso's Giro?

He's got time on every other favorite who can climb, he can out TT every other favorite who can climb, he can climb. Barring crashes or sickness, he'll be hard to beat.

I was impressed how Ullrich managed to keep in to the line while Kessler lost them the TTT.
The times are all still pretty close..minutes can be gained or lost in those mountains.

who is the patron saint of cyclists?? I need to go talk to whoever it is about Savoldelli. Basso's nose is too big. I think Savoldelli is much better looking. I want him to win.

True this race is far from over, a lot can happen in the next two weeks. However now it's time for Basso to pull a page out of the Armstrong Tour book and just match his rivals in the mountains and put time on them in the TT's. If he's the true champion that I believe he is he'll win this race.

game, set, match, Basso. How is anyone going to put time into him on the climbs? Barring sickness, this is Basso's Giro. It is unlikely he will crack in the mountains sans Lance. Put your $ on it now.

Is the double for real?

Not ready to put $ on it. He's 2:45 down now, but I think Rujano could spoil Ivan's party. IMO, he's the best climber in the race, and this is a climber's race.

I'd be more inclined to agree with you however Rujano has hardly raced at all this year due to his contractual dispute with Selle-Italia.

Or if there wasn't another 50k TT for him to loose masive time in.

+1. Der Kaiser sits in 26th place now. Seems like he really is just using the Giro for training only, considering he stepped it up when he had to and didn't look like he was struggling to keep pace in the TTT.

TDF win here he comes!!!

The guy who got hammered was Simoni...he's toast due to Saunier's result today.

Guess those ads showing him holding the Scott bike up with one finger...

I have to hand it to the Giro organizers, not screwing up the TTT with stupid rules like the TdF did...they just shortened it, as the TdF should have IMO.

The Tour organizers really need to look at the Giro and take some notes.

Yeah, Simonni isn't going to make up 1.56 if Basso can just stay with everyone on the climbs. He'll lose another 1min+ on the 50k TT. Really unless Basso cracks on one of the climbs he'll be difficult to beat.

Yes it looks good for Basso. I wonder if CSC is buying and inspecting all of his food this year. I sure would hate to see two Giro's in a row influenced by poor hygiene on the part of someone who is not even connected with the race organization. The mountain stages are going to be fun to watch. Thanks RAI!

Agreed...the Giro, IMO is a much better race now.

if Basso cracks...of course we said the same thing last year until he got the intestinal thingy...one never knows. But it's got to be really disheartening to a guy like Simoni, basically a week into the race and to really have no hope. That's a lot of work and pain to get motivated for...

Let's get her together with Michael Jackson. Their kids will be so plastic that they should just make them on an assembly line using injection moulding technology.

I'll be waiting for your post retracting this one after he gets dropped on the big climbs. One TTT isn't going to keep him near the top 20.

I don't think Ullrich is trying-Which is the point.

WOW! with T-mobile actually being able to lay down a decent team time trial.....Basso for the Giro, but Jan is goping to win the Tour!

prediction: Basso is the man to beat for the Giro.... but Jan for the tour!.... although Landis is doing really well at his individual time trial.... can't wait for July!

Did you see the TTT? He was trying. Not to say he's there to win the thing but you don't ride a race route like this without trying. I really think that the odds are no longer in Jans favor for the Tour. He's hardly raced this year, and he's only got six weeks left to get himself into Tour shape. I do think that we will see a very dramatic and wide open Tour, one that Jan will be a player in, but he's no longer the favorite.

All of the above and a nose job. Dave Z and George Hincapie's wifes are much more beautiful and have little or no work done.

Of course he was trying on this stage-It's a TEAM time trial, and he was pulling his weight. (Insert appropriate Jan weight joke here) Sort of nice to see T-Mobile actually function as a team for once.
But if he can TT like that right now, when he clearly has a bit to go, Basso might be in a whole lot of trouble come July.

Not so fast. He will have plenty of competition in the TT's. Zabriskie, Landis, Julich, Honchar, Vino, Basso, Hincapie, Valverde and a few other guys aren't going to concede anything there. Granted Zabriskie's no GC threat, and Julich (if he rides) won't be "the man" unless something happens to Basso, but all the others bear watching.
