Need some "education" on chainrings -- I have a Tricross Comp. When I was cleaning my chain recently, I realize a few of the 48T-chainring's teeth are "chipped" or rather not as "tall" as the others. I have ridden it for about 200 miles on pretty flat roads. I don't believe chainrings can be worn out that easily (unless the bike seller gave me used parts when I made my purchase and I wasn't careful about inspecting the parts of the assembled product. Frankly, I am pretty angry/shock about this. ) I am a newbie in biking. So I am wondering could it be the riding style?! Also, generally, what are the signs that indicate you really need to install new chainrings? If I do change, and if I want to change to bigger chainrings, what kind of calculations are needed (e.g. bike fit, gear ratios)? coz the 48/34 combination appears to be a little small for me.

Chainrings designed for shifting operations are ramped and pinned. This means that in the design of the chainring, some teeth are shorter to aid in shifting. This is most likely what you're describing. Don't sweat it.

+1 this is the design, they are not worn or broken or chipped!
