...if a woodchuck could cut tube?

Say you were going to cut a mtb steerer tube down. You don't plan on using any spacers below the stem, yet you want to leave some steerer above the stem, in case you wanted room for adjustment or planned on selling the fork in the future.

How much extra length would you leave on?

How about a gopher?
I heard they are either the same thing or at least the same family.

Gophers are definitely not the same as woodchucks. Groundhogs are. No frickin clue what a whistle pig is.

Okay, a little research has shown that a whistle pig is, in fact, a woodchuck. Interestingly, woodchucks/groundhogs/whistle pigs are part of the marmot family.

As for the OP question I would probably keep about 1.5 times the diameter of the steering tube above to work with. That would still give you a good range of adjustability, without it looking silly.

I always leave 7 mm. That allows me to use a 10 mm top spacer and still have the clearance for headset adjustment. That's not enough if you want to make significant height adjustments in the future.

Rule to use: cut the steerer 3mm shorter than the spacer stack you want to use above the stem.
