Sounds Japanese, but the reference to an "M" is interesting...are you sure it's not a "B" (I mistook the Basso "B" for an "M" once)?

I believe that Motobecane stamped their pedals with an "M", along with stem bolt caps, etc, on their bikes.
The M may indicate MKS, a popular pedal manufacturer. First generation 105 indicate mid-1980s. I can confirm if it's Miyata if you post the serial number. If it Miyata, it's probably a model 310. In the event, that it it is not, pics would be an asset.

Maillard made pedals too. Came as part of Galli groupsets, which were readily available in Australia in the early-mid 80's

I believe a silver or white 'M' in a black round background would be Motobecane.
