Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - NorCal/Central Valley People: If UC Davis had a Veldrome would anyone go there?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

UCD recently went Division 1. I don't follow sports that involve throwing things, so I'm not sure what that means. But I do know that they are building a stadium and that Toomey Field is no longer going to be the main sports venue at UCD.
Why not use the space at Toomey for a velodrome? Or one of the many other open spaces around town that the city council wants to stop people from building houses on?

I think there would be a large group from Sac that would go. Fantastic idea!

I would pitch a tent in the infield and move in.

MrCjolsen, is there a group behind this yet? Any momentum at all? If you need some help I have a bunch of local bike resources. We are in the process of starting a co-op bike shop in Sac and I'm sure some or most of the people helping us would want a local velodrome. drop me a line cbdougher"at"yahoo"dot" com
[shameless plug/]or anyone else intersted about the co-op[shameless plug]

I would actually like to start something. I've never raced track, and probably never will. But I see it as a way to get more people on bikes and that is good no matter how you do it.
I actually run into the Chancellor from time to time. He's a pretty cool guy. I'll start asking around.

Velodromes are like well-designed bike lanes, if you build them, they WILL get used.

You can ****ing bet that people would go there. One, Central and Northern Californians will travel rediculous amounts to do anything outdoor related (see: driving 4+ hours to go hiking), especially if there aren't any other velodromes that could be more easily accessed. Two, the bike cultures in the valleys are waiting for something cool like this. And three... I don't have a three except to say keep the dream alive yo.
DW- your folks already promised the room to me if the velodrome ever is built. And I get to keep all of the stuff you left in the attic!

I doubt that toomey field would be converted to anything. It is still used a lot for track a field events as well as P.E. classes. Cycling is not even a NCAA sport i don't think. The team on campus exist as a sport club not an official school sport. I doubt there will be enough power to get a velo on campus. Maybe over at the Covell village site...then I can just cross the street to get to it. On a side note, UC Davis just won the team category in Div. I at nationals in Kansas this past weekend. GO NATIONAL CHAMPS!
