So riding my old road bike the other day I noticed that the bottom bracket was creaking a tiny bit. Stopping to check things out there was a little side to side movement in the cranks. I took it home and promptly didn't ride it for the rest of the week, using my backup bike for commuting. I haven't had the time to look into getting a new BB for it yet but I was hoping to go to a small introductory road riding course tomorrow morning with the bike. My question is: is it alright to ride a bike with a slightly creaky BB, or should I hold off until I get it fixed?

It may just be that the crankarms are loose, as you stated in your post. Try tightening teh crankarms up, and ride around the block on a trighter gear applying pressure trying to enduce the squeeking. It's a quick fix, but overall bring it to the shop to get it checked out when you ge tthe time.

creaking could be many things...lube up the pedals first. after repacking the bearings, install the shells with teflon tape. I like to start the shell, then wrap some teflon tape on about half the threads.
