Foo - Sex and Violence

We Americans are the biggest hypocrites. We find all aspects of sex taboo, yet we are obsessed with violence. However, the majority of horrible crimes seem to be sex-related, likely due to the barrage of sexual images used to sell us stuff.

We sell our kids toy guns, and hoochie clothes to little girls, yet are surprised when teenage boys shoot up schools, and teenage girls become pregnant.

We will show a cop shooting a man holding hostages at 6:00 (just in time for dinner), yet janet Jackson flashes one nipple, and all hell breaks loose.

So, in light of this, I open the discussion with a query: If, given a choice of careers (meaning a job that would define your life), which would you find absolutely unimaginable? Porn Star, or Assassin? Prostitute or Sniper? Exotic Dancer, or Hitman?


What is worse? Getting paid for sex, or violence? Which profession could you live with? What are you most afraid/ashamed of, and why?

Not suprising considering the puritan heritage, the Revolution, and the taking of the West. In that historical context, its not suprising that repressed sexuality is often expressed with violence.

This is in part why I find slasher films so amusing....

....we can't see the actual "intimate contact" between a man and woman, regardless of context, but we can watch some poor woman get thrown into a pit full of dirty syringes (Saw II)....of course if it's a **** scene, it's somehow more acceptable than porn...go figure. Hypocrasy for the win.

....and don't get me started on Janet's tit....people that get offended at that need to grow up. Honestly, I don't see any reason to be ashamed of what we were born with. It doesn't mean go around topless, but for pete's sake, the human body is not Medusa....so let's stop acting like we are going to die some horrid death if we see it....mmkay?

I guess I might consider being a hitman and doing in people who are into gratuitous violence - but that would be one of those moral and philosophical conundrums that could make people who can't live with ambiguity go crazy. I managed to escape that (yes, the tree falling in the forest with nobody around to hear it does make a sound. Got another stupid question mate?).

Anyhoo, I wouldn't chose any of the aboved named professions just simply for the fact that I hold myself to a higher standard. I will also say that I am a freaky girl in bed and think that sex should be explored more then hidden in the closet. I don't think we would have the issues that we do have if people would be more open and willingly to discuss the topic!

Anything related to sex has been proven time and time again to have an extremely negative impact on young children's development and has an alarming rate of these children turning to prostitution, drugs, depression and suicide.It's not sex that's the problem, it's portraying it as something forbidden, dirty, and bad that's the problem. Totally conflicts with how they're feeling on the inside and makes them feel guilty and then blaming them for it that makes it even worse. Repression and avoidance of the topic is no substitute for education and experience.

I deplore violence. It makes me sick. I can't even stand watching it on movies or tv. I tried watching Saw II in the theatre and I had my eyes closed the entire time. I just can't do it. I don't want to be desensitized either. I find it absolutely vile.

I love sex, however. I think americans do tend to have unhealthy obsessions with it because of religious upbringings and repression and social taboo.

I could pick neither as a profession. I think either one of those would end up killing me, either physically or psychologically.

Im holding up well so far.. thanks for caring :)

And I think that is where the crux of the problem comes from.
Greater acceptance of what we consider taboo results in greater acceptance in things that should under no circumstances be accepted and it also increases the greater demand for bending the laws.

There also is the flip side of the coin which my dad has occasionally commented on regardings marijuana. By Legalizing marijuna you solve almost as many problems as people think would be created and those who have no self compunction and over do it will quickly be identified and will deal their own demise.

However when it comes to exploitation of children, one really shouldn't/can't take this risk although there are several countries that have opted for this.

Part of the difference in your list isn't so much sex vs violence, but subject of exploitation vs being the actor.

So yeah, I could probably rationalize being a sniper a lot faster than being buggered for cash. That's said, exotic dancer is relatively low on the exploitation scale - hell, the entire Harvard Marching Band has seen my butt - such that I can imagine that the moral aversion to committing a crime taking hold.
