Commuting - First day in a car for three weeks...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So, I've been really good. Spent three weeks cycling in and out of work, totalling 38Km a day. (which I figure is about 22 miles or so??)
Anyway. I had a chiropractors appt. today, and it was raining (Glasgow, no surprise) - so I thought I'd cheap out and take the car.
It's normally at 20 minute journey to get into work. Not today. An hour and a half I was stuck in traffic for, coz some goon had the nerve to crash into a bridge barrier (although, they may have flipped over it, in which case, they may be dead, and I feel a little guilty for calling them a goon).
Either way though, I think this was God's way of telling me I should have put on some water-proofs and taken the bike.
It's funny how you get used to it though. All day I've been feeling 'antsy' - too much energy, but really tired and lacklustre at the same time.
So tomorrow, rain or not, I'm taking the bike.
Thanks for reading, have a good week.

I was upset yesterday because I couldn't ride to work. We had a Mothers Day dinner to go to and I wouldn't have made it in time if I had ridden. All through work and dinnner yesterday all I could think about was getting home, changing into my biking shorts and shirt and going for a ride. As soon as I got home thats what I did. I honestly am not missing my car at all since I started to ride to work.
I feel your pain man.
I took the subway today. It was the rain/thundershower prediction and the fact that I had to go to our other office today where they don't allow bikes in the building that drove me to the subway. I'm bummed...
Doesn't feel right if I don't ride my bike in... and to think I used to take the subway 5 days/week...

I just got off a 3 day weekend. No riding. Felt like crap the whole time. Raining constantly, so I just sat around inside. It's still raining but I feel much better now after the ride in to work.

I know what you're talking about. I can't take my bike to work once every couple of weeks and on those days I'm tired, sluggish, not fully awake, drink horrible amounts of coffee...

Wimps. :p
Try driving in on Friday and planning on recreational rides Sat and Sunday.
Then your two year old gets sick Friday night at 6:00pm and takes until 5:00pm Sunday to recover to the point you do not have to hold him. Poor guy was running a 101 temp. Just part of being a dad. :)
I'm just resigned to rain until September. *sigh* I ride, therefore I am.

Ha! I'm like that after too much booze. Driving a car = hangover...

I drove my husband's car for the first time in two weeks, I hated it. You can't drive your car into the building like I do with the bike. It has been raining everyday and it does not look like it is going to end. I am going to have to put on a rain coat and ride my bike cause I don't feel right.

I love riding in the rain, although it takes awhile to dry out the clothes even with rain gear..but well worth it!
I hate not riding now..gotta do it even when i'm not working if it's an addiction at least it's healthy..
I feel the same when i don't ride..like a junky without his "fix".. tired sluggish..jumpy..cold..feaverish.okay i'm exagerating... :)
Once you're used to the exercise, not getting it gives you an idea of how everyone who drives all the time feels but they've just adapted to it..poor bastards no wonder they're so grumpy..
Cheers..

Get a good vented rain jacket. I love mine, it's the best bike accessory I ever bought, except maybe the fenders. Riding in the rain isn't even relevant anymore, it's just riding. Kind of fun, if anything. The sound of the rain partially drowns out the irritating sound of traffic, and the rain drives down the horrible stench of cars.
So today's commute:
Morning - post rain, got absoloutely filthy, it was tough riding through all the mud, and I got a puncture.
Evening - throwing it down with rain, a midge flew into my eye, I hadn't located the cause of the puncture, so I got another one in my spare and had to keep pumping it up, and my iPod has been infected by the wife's tunes - I know this as I was listening to the Grease soundtrack for part of the jounrney.
And when I got home, I weighed myself before and after getting out of my wet clothes - 7 pounds of difference!
But you know what? I wouldn't have had it any other way. Had a huge grin on my face the whole way home!
Although, I did order myself some nice waterproofs today! I couldn't find anything about waterproof shoes. Are there any? Or do I just get over-shoes?
Anyway, loving being back on the two wheels.
John
