Touring - Nashbar Panniers dead already

I haven't toured yet but am dialling in by bike by grocery shopping with it etc. Anyway I ripped the second velcro strap on one of my rear waterproof bags making it quite likely to bounce off. I'm sending them in for a return but wondered what I should use for a replcement? I'm using a Tubus Logo rear rack on a large frame mountain bike. I love the rack, just want new rear bags. I'm thinking of getting some ortlieb's.

Ortlieb's will last a lifetime and cn be found at most REI's making it both a quick and very good replacment.

Ortliebs are great, but there are some drawbacks to the waterproof design in some situations. Take a look also at Jandd and Arkel panniers, both excellent designs. The Jandd packs are bombproof for off-road use and commuting, the Arkels are also excellent and go on and off a lot easier.

I have Arkel on both front and back. Great panniers and great warrenty.

I bought a pair of Jandd Mountain panniers off eBay awhile back thinking they would be downright awesome for extended touring. After a couple of rides however, I've come to the conclusion the locking system was designed by chimps. The bags have tons of lateral play because the crummy velcro straps and poorly designed hook mechanism won't allow for adequate tension. I think Jandd has since improved their mounting system, but I would definatly avoid the earlier generation of panniers.

My cheapo MEC panniers feel 10x sturdier.

They do look like great bags. I am in the market for some bags for my front rack. I like the fact that they have steel hooks. However, I have never broken a plastic one. Have you or have you heard of this happening to someone?

KoffeeNo, I got the "daytrekker" pannier you're talking about. Works fine for my commute everyday, but I wouldn't tour with something so small. I'm glad for this thread, because I was thinking about getting the Nashbar panniers, but I think I'll spring for the Jandd ones instead.

I have a set of the Nashbar waterproof panniers. I don’t actually use them for touring, but use them for training. I keep a phone book in each of the fronts, and 2 each in the rears. When I have all 4 on the bike, it adds about 50-55 pounds of ballast. I also tore off the Velcro tabs pretty quickly. Once I sewed them back on, they have worked pretty well. I don’t think I would trust them for touring, they seem kind of light duty.

I have the Nashbar waterproof panniers and have commuted with them for several years. They seem pretty good to me, especially for the price. I would (and have) tour with on the road, but I would not use them offroad.

aroundoz I've never heard of any breakages of the steel clips. They're the strongests I've seen.
