Mountain Biking - Rear wheel question

Hello, can anyone explain composites of rear wheel; if I would build a whole rear wheel myslelf from separate parts, what components would I need? Explain the function of each. I'm new to this, so I hope no one will attack me for posting a ridiculous thread. :D

rim - holds nipples
hub - holds spokes
spokes - hold hub to nipples
nipples - hold spokes to rim
spokeprep - so spokes don't loosen
rim strips - to protect tube

A great way to learn how to build wheels is to find an old beat up one, take it a part with a spoke wrench, and try to reassemble it. Remember to tighten the spokes evenly, don't continually tork one spoke so it's as tight as possible - I did this and it ruined my rear wheel. :p.

If you are wanting to do it on the cheap, no way you are going to be able to build a wheel cheaper than building one pre built.

Definately. Building a pre built wheel is quick and inexpensive. :D Although, generally less fun.

I understood what the problem was. The rear hub has to be changed. Logically, by changing the hub I'll have to buy a new rim and spokes, because I'm not sure if my rim will fit the new hub. So now I'm looking for rear hubs, any suggestions? I'm on tight budget. Type of riding - xcountry and pavement, aggressive and fast
