Encinitas Tri?

Hello there,

I'm signed up for the Encinitas Sprint Tri this weekend, and won't have a chance to recon it. Any tips or observations on it? The website says the route is flat. Is that true? What about the water in that area? Choppy? Riptide? Just looking to get some idea what to look for.

I used to live there, but I never did that particular race. I did look at the race map, though, and I'm very familiar with that area and have ridden and run there many times. It is indeed flat. You'll be going along coast highway, which has some rolling sections, but nothing that could really be called a hill. It appears to be an out and back. It's really very pretty and is a very common "Sunday" ride for a lot of folks. The water is totally dependent on what the surf is like. You can look at a surf report and see what conditions are supposed to be like. I've been there when it's ankle-deep rollers, and I've been there when the surf is huge. It just really depends. They'll modify the course depending on currents and surf. It's really a lovely place. Have fun and good luck!
