I'm not much of a sandwich or bread eater, so I'm not really sure on this.
For the peanut butter, it's creamy, right? Doesn't seem like a PB&J should be crunchy. And real butter, or is Canola or margerine OK?
Then there's the jelly. I used to use strawberry, but I ran out once, so I used grape. That was good, but I got tired of it and tried some others. Eventually I went back to strawberry. Is that best?
What about the bread? I'm really torn over this. Tradition tells me Wonder Bread, but the whole grain stuff is good too.
Are brands important?
oh jeez, this is like putting three threads into one...
WELL WELL WELL WELL...
First for a good PBJ sandwich you got to get a good bread. A nice whole wheat bread is good for the healthy people out there. But if you dont care about calories etc. I like white or potato because they are nice and soft.
Next is the peanut butter. For a nice smooth PBJ I would go with creamy peanut butter. More specifically Teddy's. Teddys is the best when it comes to quality, taste and seperation factor. And none of that Skippy sugar/chemical added crap...
Then there is the jelly. I personally HATE grape jelly. Don't understand the fad behind it. That stuff is horrible. Most of the time when I get jelly its NO SUGAR ADDED All Fruit Smuckers jelly with NO seeds. That's what I use most of the time. In my cabinet I have a jar of organic homemade jelly from a place in NY that I am eagerly waiting to try. But that's beside the point.
Next is the question of "toast the bread or not?" Personally it depends on my mood. If I feel like the crunch I will toast the bread lightly. Not too much though. But again if you want that really creamy yummy PB&J you should prob leave the bread untoasted.
Next assembly is pretty basic. Take one slice, get a good dollop of PB (some say 2 tbls but I never really measure) Smear that evenly on piece one. Then take piece two get a nice dollop of Strawberry jelly. But Not too much or else it over powers the PB factor of a PBJ. Once you have to two sides covered in either PB or J put em together and cut in half (diagonal or down the center your choice) and ENJOY!!!!!!!
There is an art behind PBJ, with practice you will find your PBJ moksha...
No go young grasshopper and experiment!
As far as a really good whole wheat bread that goes really well with PBJ, I would say the "Bakers Inn" Bread. That is really good stuff. There basic whole wheat is good. They have a honey whole wheat that is also good, but I dont really like the extra sugar....
This is a killer PB&J
Take the bread and spread margerine on one side of each piece, on the side opposite the butter put jelly on one and peanut butter on the other. Put it together toss it in a fry pan and make a grilled PB&J.
Make PB&J MealPack...
Take equal parts of any peanut butter, any jam or jelly and any bread (remove crust),...
Equal by volume, not weight!
Put ingredients into TWO double zipper sandwich bags; remove air; and mush together.
Ready to serve with no mess (just bite of a corner of the bags and squeeze).
Dispose of properly when finished eating your fine meal :D

I tried that...heard it was awesome. It sounded awesome. Ya know what? It didn't do a thing for me.
Best PB&J is with no J to ruin the immaculate flavor of the PB! ;) But "if you must"....I think grape is better for a PB&J. Yes, CREAMY is the way to go and skippy brand is my fave. Reeses has one too that is very good. NO butter/margarine or any of that.
Bread....go with the bread you like best. I like multi-grain bread, but that's probably not the best for a PB&J. White or wheat with no "seeds" would probably work better.

I say nothing but potato bread will suffice. medium toasted.
Apply the crunchy peanut butter (creamy is totally unacceptable, you must get that nice crunch!) in about a 1/4" to 1/2" thick layer to taste, then apply an equal quantity of Jelly (Orange marmalade for me).
This is, in my humble opinion, is the only true way to make a PB&J.

i gotta go with crunchy PB, raspberry jelly and a diagonal cut with the extra pb&j from the knife smeared back onto the top of the bread. i usually eat this with potato chips and a soda. that makes a kick ass lunch.
I make PB&J with creamy peanut butter and soft white bread. I'm not a brand w**** so I don't really care which ones. Jelly on the other hand, it has to be good. I usually try to buy the more expensive ones or - this is the shiznit - get a jar of my mom's homemade stuff when I visit her. The most expensive jellies in the store hardly compare to homemade. Two pieces of bread, a whole bunch of peanut butter on one and then a whole bunch of jelly on the other (and I have to do it in that order - PB then J always.) Damn. I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow :p .
As a side note, as a kid I sometimes subsituted marshmallow fluff (the marshmallow stuff in a jar) for jelly. Talk about sweet. I can't do that anymore without feeling my teeth decaying as I chew.
One other thing I do is the peanut butter and banana sandwich. Get a banana, slice it half the long way, then in half the short way (so 4 pieces total). Two pieces of bread, peanut butter on both this time, then stick the banana on 1 piece, cover with the other piece and enjoy :) .
Two pieces of bread, spread an even layer of PB on one slice, spread an even layer of jelly, honey, kayro, lecvar, etc on the other, spread a thin layer of butter over the PB. Put the two slices together (PB &... on the inside) and enjoy!

when i put butter on I put it on the bread, then put the peanut butter, then put jelly on other side.

I've never tried potato bread, but as I was typing that, I almost suggested it as it seems it would be the perfect bread.
But then again...you obviously know nothing about PB suggesting crunchy....so nevermind. ;)
ooooo grilled PB&J...I have Italian bread too.. OOOO oooo OOOO!

Oh, but you deny that which is the conglomeration of both creamy peanut goodness, as well as the meaty bite of a whole peanut? But that is the entire portrait of yum, the entire kaleidoscope of taste, it is the yin and the yang of culinary bliss....the crunchy peanut butter.
Combined with the soft, yet flavorful potato bread, and with a good jam/jelly/marmalade, is quite a tastey combination.
Toasting the bread makes it a little more tear resistant...some potato breads are outright delicate!
potatoe bread is a treat like no other. Last time I had it was like 5 mor 6 years ago...

Wheat bread, PB mixed with honey and banana slices! YUM! :)
Oh yeah, and cut it diagonally.
The first step in the absolute best way to make any sandwich is to yell out "Honey...."

First, let's skip all the artificial food crap. Get a natural, unpasteurized, hopefully organic peanut butter....be prepared to stir it to redistribute the separated oil. Remember that that liquid oil is actually much healthier than the hydrogenated oil added to some peanut butter to make it seem nicer.
Then use real butter. You don't need much, but it makes the peanut butter far less sticky in your mouth. Margarine is a highly processed and altered form of fat, every bit as caloric as butter, and the low cholesterol is a minor factor, far outweighed by the general wholesomeness of butter.
I prefer raspberry jam in pb&j, but strawberry is fine. Don't worry about the sugar content...just go or a ride after.

What's lekvar?
I need to try the all natural way like cooker said, but the raspberry gives me stink fart (my wife says I dont need to add to my repetoire of "habits".)
And the nutella replaces the PB or the J? The nutella on ryvita reminds me of somebody.......

The Nutella can:
Replace the PB, or the butter, or just be added to the PB side or eaten as a side with a spoon. I can't keep the stuff in the house anymore.
BTW: between the PB and butter I sometimes add honey.

That's the way I make 'em, but sometimes I'll sprinkle some cinammon and/or raisins in there too...good stuff :)

I cannot believe that this is actually under discussion. 2. Or that anyone is adding recipes or 3. That I actually read the whole first page. I've got to get a life. Think I'll go ride instead.
Yo ALWAYS ALWAYS start with the best bread you can afford. Peanut butter either style is good. Bananas are good, honey is really good, homemade freezer jam either strawberry or another berry is good. Grape if you are going to watch saturday morning cartoons regularly.

Whole grain and seed bread, with plenty of chewy grains and seeds inside. None of that factory produced junk. Toasted on both sides!
Replace the "J" with honey and a sprinkle of spices, or a jam with lots of fruit, or best of all cranberry relish. (I like the banana idea, too)
This is how I do it-
Take an english muffin and toast it. Only a little bit of butter, let it melt when the muffin comes out. Then put an even amount of crunchy pb or smooth, and any kind of jelly. Preferrably a tropical jelly. The heat from the english muffin will warm up the jelly and melt the pb a little bit, thus making it easier to swallow. Mhmmm, no better way.

A riff on the whole peanut butter thing: a Ritz cracker, spread with peanut butter, topped with a whole marshmallow and run under the broiler until the marshmallow is golden brown and soft. Pop whole into your mouth and enjoy!

My all time favorite:
PB&J Oatmeal
oatmeal
organic fruit spread 1-2 tablespoons
raw fruit
1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter
1-2 cups of water
1/2 cup of soy( or reg) milk
heat and stir, top with peanuts, serve with buttered toast
Man, that's good!

You are OBVIOUSLY not a connoisseur of peanutbutter. Every true connoisseur I've ever known, will take creamy every time. The peanuts distract from the flavor and texture of pure peanut butter.

Toasted whole wheat bread. Non sweatened, non hydrogenated, crunchy peanut butter. Any number of Polaner All-Fruit spreads. Four saltine crackers, evenly spaced between peanut butter and fruit spread.
And a nice Pilsner to wash it down.

I don't know what everyone else said, but they're all wrong. Grilled bread w/ chunky PB, and substitute grilled chicken, chili peppers, and sprouts for jelly.
My way is the best. Hands down.

There is no distraction. It's just creamy peanut butter is like having only a center channel in your home theater...when the added texture and flavor of the whole nuts, adds to the entire experience.

I completely forgot about potato bread! We used to have potaton rolls for dinner sometimes when I was a kid. I'll have to go find some.
I think I've settled on:
Light grain rye bread, untoasted
Adams no-stir creamy peanut butter
Sweetened, unsalted butter (on the PB side only)
Store brand strawberry preserves
