Had an interesting discussion at lunch with a friend today about this topic. Research do show that blondes get more attention and perhaps have and are more fun. Don't have any concrete numbers, but people in the cosmetology industry seem to think that anywhere from 60-75% of SoCal blondes are fake. A much, much lower percentage of clientele (10-15%) choose brunette.
What do you think? Is it just the colour of your hair? Or is it a character trait/role that you play? Or is it a lifestyle?

I hate what being blonde represents. The personality disorder annoys me greatly. IMO it is a character flaw/trait. Seeing as some blondes aren't mentally slow and some brunnettes aren't brilliant I leave it to the character/trait.

I know some blonde haired women who are sharp as razors, and I have a guy friend whom I affectionately say is "the blondest guy I know." So I guess I draw a distinction between blonde hair and a "blonde character."
And Danno, I hate to be a nit (but I know you can appreciate it), but if you don't have concrete numbers, then where are you coming up with any numbers?
(and I realize I'm not adding much to the conversation here. You may ignore happily)

Both...dual definitions.
Blonde (hair)......yellowish tint of hair
Blonde (mentality).....Ditzy....the kind of person who locks themselves out of a convertible, while the top is down...yet still tries to pop the lock with a coat hanger.

And Danno, I hate to be a nit (but I know you can appreciate it), but if you don't have concrete numbers, then where are you coming up with any numbers? The numbers out there are very informal because they come from numerous sources that have not been compiled into a single study. However, these numbers do seem to corroborate each other. I also suspect that the people who are single-handedly involved, the cosmetologists and hair-salons, do have a good idea of the numbers since they're the ones responsible for creating these blondes,. :)
However, my own personal experience is that Hollywood has somehow created this personnae of the ditzy-blonde when in reality, I haven't found blondeness to be much of a liability. I know many who are super-bright, intelligent and can kick my @ss on the bike. I've known just as many who started their own businesses and gone on to being very successful compared to non-blondes. In school, their grade-performances were commensurate with their colleagues. So... I think the media-perception and image created doesn't match the reality. The numbers of blondes who can't figure out if "Chicken of the Sea" is tuna or chicken is probalby in the minority. However, if you follow anyone around for 3-months with a video-camera, I'm sure you can edit it down to a couple of totally idiotic scenes that makes them out to be completely stupid, just like the rest of us.
Here's some articles of interest:

Wilson Quarterly - Looks Do Matter (http://www.howardwfrench.com/archives/2005/08/08/looks_do_matter/) (references hip:waist ratio)
Of course there ARE blondes that exploite the stereotype and live it up as much as they can to get away with what the blonde lifestyle does for them... ;)

I was in a bar in college and from across the room I saw a group of women. The blond stood out. Why? Because in the dark you can see them. Men are stupid - look, pretty shiny thing.

I wonder if any other country on this planet finds blondes to be airheaded. :)
I have white blonde hair personally and find it very funny when people make blonde jokes around me and get very apolegetic when I hear it. I don't take offense though to something so silly though. Wish they had funny character traits given to other hair colors though. They must get rather bored. Maybe thats why people turn blonde, you get the attention?
Like Oh my gawd... there is a thread about blondes. OH MY GAWD. This is totally going to be the best thread ever. EVER.

Ill tell you what it's like to be blond.. it's facing discrimantion everyday in every single way. I am so sick of the stereotype attached to blondes, no.. i am not any more kinky then the girl with brown hair and I dont have to prove to you that I am smart because YOU decided that the color of my hair makes me dumb. I am a blonde and even used to have almost white blonde hair earlier in life and yes, the hair color somehow gets a lot of attention, but it's YOUR problem, in no way shape or form should it become mine and should I act as the sexual fantasy that YOU think I am, we blondes didnt ask for this attention and some of us truly dislike it a and dislike fighting discrimantion everyday base on a stupid hair color... here, now I feel better.

and I should add... my screan name was picked on purpose, I have dealt all my life with people expecting me to be inferior to them because i was blonde.. and I dont want them to forget that yes, it was a a blonde who beat you up that hill and trust me, I have heard all comments of surprise from men when i do pass them, it ranges from being surprise it was a woman to passing comment on the blonde pony tail sticking out of the helmet.. the screan name is a bit because I am defiant of stereotype.

Go, Blondie!
I read somewhere that young blondes currently face the most discrimination in the workplace. I will have to find the article because it was very interesting. Their promotional ceiling is a lot lower than young women sporting darker hair.
Blonde was the natural color of my hair til 8th grade.
Blonde is now the fake color of my hair.

yeah but some how we are all double standard about this, did you ever think a blond guy's purpose in life is to be a sexual object and has a inferior IQ? nah... we reserve this kind of treatment for woman only... they dont have enough to keep up with allready from how they should look according to the media, now let's torture them about thier hair color...
I think this thread is GREAT!! I wanted to be BLONDE so much growing up that I colored my hair blonde, now this is funny if you saw me. I have VERY dark features and coloring my hair blonde was the worse mistake of my teen years.:D
I wanted to be liked by the boys cause I could see how much they like the girls with blonde hair. Also my mother has blonde hair (fake) and I wanted to be like her too.
Now being an adult, I wouldn't change my hair color for the world. I love being a brunette and could careless if that makes me boring, dumb, etc. (have to say I'm the complete opposite). :D

My hair was split pine blonde when I was a child. It darkened as I got older. My daughter has the same, and at 12, her hair is starting to change. She is in the gifted program in her school, and even then, she gets lumped into the stereotype of being a dumb blonde. I have advised her to politely correct someone once, after that, just let them think whatever.
She is also half Spanish/Cuban, but doesn't look it. I love it when someone will start trashing her in spanish to a friend, (calling her dumb blonde, cracker, etc, ad nauseum) and she rips them a new one in her flawless Castilian.

Hahaha I never found the blonde girls to be kinky anyways. More the girl next door...blondes get the rep, redheads carry *that* torch (how many more stereotypes are there haha)
Good rant. What actually annoys me most are the dyed blondies who act dumb because they think thats the way. My mom (and myself) are both blond and far from stupid...but all the dye job girls I meet feel the need to act blonde...thats why to me it is a personality disorder and not the truth...

<big smile>heh, heh... I'm actually quite confused by the whole "blonde" phenomenae really... My personal experience has not shown the extremes that is portrayed in the stereotypes so I wonder where they came from? Certainly the 10-20% that play ditzy to take advantage of the image can't possibly reinforce it that much?
As for fitness, I have no idea. What percentage of top, mid-range, bottom-tier athletes are blonde? How does that relate to the percentage of blondes in the overall population? Someone must've done a master's thesis on this at some point in time?
I just don't get it! I'm really confused by it all, and I'm not even BLOND! Well, I've had black hair, brown hair, red hair, blue hair, green hair, purple hair, but never blond... hmmm... maybe that's next! :)

Sure they can. Because that is the blonde that you remember. I worked with a woman who was a bottle blonde and she really tried the dumb blonde routine. "I'm a blonde" is what she would say. I would tell her "Bullsh*t, your a mother and a wife, and you do the thinking for both of those boys. So stop trying to get a free ride and do your job." Then she would get all coy and hit on me, and I would have to tell her bad things about myself just so she would leave me alone. 'Cause if Wife found out, Bottlejob would need to see a proctologist to get Wife's cowboy boot out of her butt.
I got fired for my attitude.....can you believe that????

When I was a boy, I had very light blonde hair -- almost white. When I hit the teenage years, it started getting darker until it ended up brown when I was in my 20's. Now it's going gray :( .
Since I've been on both sides of the fence, I can tell you without a doubt that blondes are discriminated against -- both males and females. It's because non-blondes are jealous of natural blondes.
BTW, I'm fascinated by natural redheads.
