Hey there Vegas !

I was originally gonna do it.. at least I had thought about it a few months ago.. but that was before I bought my house and therefore a little short on cash... that, and the fact is I'm still trying to get my legs back into it... on the trainer a couple tiems a week,a nd then rides on the weekend... I could probably do the short ride.. what is it like 25 miles ?/ but I'd rather do the longer one at 60 I think... Are there any rides in the LV area this year, before it gets too hot ?

Jeff

Vegas. That is a woos tour... I want something a little more challenging.. Since I can't do both, I choose The Death Valley 100. Just like Nevada's OATBRAN tour, I like roads without cars. I think Death Valley will offer the better odds of delivering upon that wish.. I am one who often responds to anti- car threads ! But, I am not cycling all the way to Death Valley -March 1.. My bike will be atop my car... So can't keep to my convictions.... They have a 60, 100, and 200 mile tour.. I am doing the 100..

Any idea what kind of rating for difficulty on the ride at Palm Springs? I am new to these kinds of events so any insight would be appreciated.

Well, at the last minute, Sam and I figured we could make the trip south to do this century. So, VegasCyclist, look for a two-tone Meridian tandem that will be leaving the second the politicians and DJs stop talking at 7am. We'll be going too slow to want to hang with us, but say hi.

King's Hockey: To give you an idea about the TdPS, here are two quotes from posts I made in 2002. From a thread in December:

It's a good first time century, around 3600 feet of climbing over 104 miles, no killer grades. Because it is the desert, you can expect a 40F difference in temperature over the ride: 45F at the start, 85F by midday. By the first rest stop people usually shuck their arm warmers, leg warmers, and glove liners. By the lunch stop, folks who didn't pack lip balm are usually regretting it.
From a thread last February:

Just got back from doing the Tour de Palm Springs century last Saturday in southern California. Originally, I was going to do it on my single bike since my wife Sam usually has a conference on that weekend, but this year she decided to skip that so we could do the ride on the tandem. It was cooler this year, with the temps in the afternoon getting to around 73F/23C, about 12F degrees less than last year (and 20 degrees warmer than our home base 300 miles north). It is a good century for a tandem, with a couple of long stretches in the desert where the road is straight, the pavement is good, the wind is at your back, and you're going downhill. We could tick along at 38mph for significant distances and pass all the folks who passed us on the uphill parts--the standard "tandem leapfrog." Of course, we did see them all again on the other side of the valley where the route went into the foothills and gravity was no longer our friend!

Uncle Stu. No killer grades but over 3000 ft of climbing..That must be the 100 miler. Maybe not a woos tour?
With the Death Valley 100 coming up- not sure how much the climb will slow a person down during our winter.
On a 100 mile tour this time of year,I would think a century freak would not need a light for dark conditions.. Of course organizers expect night lights if needed.. When , I did my last 113 mile ride with 4 significant climbs and moving with a really slow touristy types in about 6 hours..Naw, don't need a night light. March it should be getting dark about 6 pm.

Thanks UncaStuart, I have signed up for the 55 miles as this is 10 miles farther then I have ridden (at one time) and seems like a good place to start. I hope to get to the Century mark soon.

My club (Tailwinds Bicycle Club) will be there this weekend. We will be the geezers at the back of the pack.
See ya there!

Sounds like it would be fun, but unfortunatly I won't be able to make it.

Funny, this is the first time I've ever heard of it.

Same time next year?

Have fun guys.
