Hey,

So check this out. As alot of people here know I am a drummer. At my school there are two jazz groups. One is the Jazz Project (which I am currently in) where its a jazz band where any instrument can join. Then there is the Jazz Ensemble where you have to try out, and the teacher is pretty strict about how many people join for each section etc.

So The try outs were last week, and today after jazz project last block he handed out the try out sheets. And sure enough on the top of the sheet was in blue ink "Jazz Ensemble"

WOOOO WOOOOO!

This is great, I can not wait for next year!

Thanks

Good job! I was in "jazz band" back in high school(approimately 100 years ago). It was a lot of fun. My son was in it also for several years when he was in school. He played the trumpet and also the guitar so he had a good time too.

Make sure you bust out the big drum fills from the middle of "Tom Sawyer" at a most inappropriate time during some Dixieland rag....

Then just tell them you are improvising 'cause it's JAZZ, man!

Way to go!

Thanks everyone!

I have to say that jazz band is indeed alot of fun, and something that I actually have only started this year. I dont know why I didnt start last year. Whatever though, its all good!

Oh btw, to the people that know anime...There is a show called "Cowboy Bepop" Its a pretty cool show but the soundtrack for the show is just amazing. For the next concert we are doing we are doing a song called "Tank!" And holy crap does that song rule.

I did the jazz thing in HS -- soprano/tenor sax and guitar. During practice one day I busted out a mouthpiece-only solo, which was funny. One of the other guys did it a while later during a concert -- which was scary.

/had a range of an octave and a half on the mouthpiece

Congratulations man!

we went to a lot of competitions and our teacher arranged a bunch of concerts for us. we even played at a few old folks homes here and there. our instructor really put a lot of work into that class and constantly pushed the admins for more resources.

we did some fun songs too like a jazz verison of 'stairway to heaven'. i had a guitar solo in that. i remember one time playing it and my pickup was cutting in and out, so i got frustrated and jammed the selector to the back pickup and cranked the volume right before my solo. i belted out that solo and everyone clapped like crazy afterward. for a high school dorkwad, that was pretty badass!

haha sweet tim..

Yeah I am pretty sure the jazz project does do a little touring going to some old folks homes etc.

but also there is this thing called jazz combo, where my band teacher selects a group of students (basically its the strictest of all jazz bands in my school) and they actually do gigs gigs. That would be sweet to do that. I dunno though.

Congrats. Around here Jazz ensemble is considered pretty exclusive, bandwise. It's more popular than concert band.:D

well, there is a thing called jazz combo that I mentioned earlier, and I have a feeling I ahve a chance on that. But I am actually doing jam sessions with 3 other guys and thats fun. I am trying actually to put together my own combo.
