Mountain Biking - what do you think about the manitou sherman line?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

ive been thinking about getting something off of the mantiou sherman line, which one do you think is the best? do they stand up to they're reputation? is it a waste of money?

Personally, Im always wary of first-year technology. I like to give something two or three years to establish itself before i invest any real money into it.
I think that if you were looking at the 6 inch single crown, you'd also be investing in a frame with a 1.5" head tube as well right? If that were the case, id say go for it. Somebody's got to try it out and tell everyone else. If you're looking at any of the others though, i think i'd stick with something that is known to work. Maybe a Psylo or a z1 would be a good choice.
Its all matter of personal preference.
I think the whole 1.5 "standard is crap. That, when teamed with the fact that I've never found a manitou that I've liked, will give you a highly negative response.

Not a waste...a risk...as stated above it is first year tech 6" sc and 1.5 headtube which depending on your stance may or may not be needed in either case. According to math 1.5 does nothing exra of the current standard and many riders says it fixes a problem that doesn't exist with a good headset.
If you like to play and aren't afraid to brake stuff go for it, no one wll know how good it is until 7 months from now when they have been ridden longer than 1 month :)

I say just wait for Marzocchi's 6" SC to come out...
if MOTORCYCLES have smaller head tubes than us... why do we need to go to a 1.5" tube? .. It's utterly rediculous. Manitou is good for nothing but complicating the industry standards...
I've tried TONS of different Manitous.. and all of them have ridden like crud.. I've tried everything from my friends old Manitou SX-LT, SX-Carbon, Mars, their DH line (the old carbon fork), and I've ridden a fellow employee's Sherman... it was OK... nothing special. I'd rather have a Zocchi' anytime...

i really like the looks of them, but im not sure about the preformance. The breakout was put in "the best" in mountain bike magazine. The firefly is supposed to be just as good as the top of the line breakout, but with 5" of travel and a standard diameter steer tube. I would probably wait a few years too until i would consider buying.

The 1 year I had a perfect set up for me except 1 thing, the rear shock, stem, cranks deraillieurs, wheels, hubs, tires and bottom bracket and headset were great the problem was the Fork which was a Manitou Black 100/120.

Since you obviously have absoultely no idea about the whole 1.5 standard except that 1.5 = manitou, why dont you go here and read up a little http://www.onepointfivestandard.com/ And as for the manitou black, the 100/120's did feel pretty crappy and didnt work very well, but I had an 80/100 on a jamis dakar and I beat the hell outta that thing and it never had a problem. I might get a RM switch with a sherman at mid season just to try it out.

Seems the general opinion is "let's wait a few years for the idea to establish itself." I follow that line of thought and it seems sensible, but could actually be what kills the idea of the sherman.

Have you heard if they plan to?

Holy crap...someone here actually educated themselves beyond listening to their friends say "1.5 steerers suck dood".
I'm impressed!

i agree. as in any business, if you cant beat 'em, use smoke and mirrors. marzzochi is the leader and most used FR/DH fork, and manitou cant compare, so hey, lets make a new standard. marketing BS
