Southern California - OC to San Diego

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone done this lately? I did it years ago and remember getting lost (more like confused) at a few different points.
Is there a detailed map available?

You could always Gmap it. Go to www.gmap-pedometer.com , go to your starting point and start clicking. The maps are Google Maps and should be pretty accurate. In terms of routes...I think you can go to Mapquest, do your origin and destination, and select 'avoid highways'. The actual 'Map' might not be so good, but the turns and mileage will get you where you're going.

True, but we've got many other problems to deal with here, mainly social....

If you can find it, you can also follow the annual Amtrak Century Bike Ride route from Irvine to SD...:)

well, *I* wouldn't say warm all year.... but compared to North and East, 50 degree days are warm:D
I ridden plenty of mornings in the upper 30s.
And as Fixer said, SoCal not the most social place to live. Although that seems to change as you go south of OC.
That all said, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

That's part of my morning commute and our Saturday ride. It is about one mile with a little under 500 feet of elevation gain. The average grade is between 5 and 8%. A pretty decent hill, but there are many biddger climbs a little further east.
Torrey Pines is a bit over a mile long and a bit over 400 feet high, with an average grade of perhaps 6.5% along the meat of the climb (not counting shallow grades near the beginning and end). It's a rather steady grade, with no extreme sections, though it does get slightly steeper (perhaps low 7's) for a while in the second half.
Assuming you are in decent shape and have appropriate gearing for your ability, it's no big deal. It can be mentally frustrating, though, since you always think the end is right around the next bend, and the hill just seems to go on and on as a result. It's all mental, though.

Actually, it's just under 2 miles long unless you are talking about the short route that starts at the parking lot. I've ridden both and the short route is definitely tough. I was out of the saddle almost all the way up it.
I'm talking about the route along N Torrey Pines Rd. There's no way it's 2 miles if you just count the meat of the climbing. 2 miles at 6-6.5% average grade would be a 633-686 foot hill. The bulk of the climbing is in a ~1.2 mile section.

When I measured it, bottom to top I found it to be 6% to 7%, 1.45 miles, 392 ft.
Agreed, it seems like it never ends because you can never see the top as you climb up and round the gentle bends in the road.
Me and my girlfriend are preliminarily planning on doing the OC to SD ride this fall. We are going to drive up the night before, stay at a motel. Do the ride, go back on the private train, stay over another night then drive home then next day.

Well, riding around the San Diego area is much more dangerous than anywhere I lived in Norcal. There's definitely reason to worry about traffic trying to kill you. Especially riding along the coast. That said, you can ride almost every day of the year.
As for Torrey Pines, since it's sadly one of the only "climbs" near me... The climb on the main road (the "outside" climb) is about 390 ft over about 1.3 mi. The "inside" climb that goes up through the state park has a steep part of just under a kilometer, at about 8.8%, followed by a mile of very gentle, but rough pavement. Definitely the slower, but more fun option.

Are you sure? If so, that's Great to hear! Thanks for the update. It's amazing how many people still ride on the freeway: I'm surprised that's still legal if there's an alternate route available to cyclists (although it is less direct). :)
Bring a state ID for Pendelton, they may stop you and if they do, the ID is necessary to pass the line (unless you want Marines to think you are a terrorist...
Rest of the ride is easy.
Come join me for a safety clinic for the MS Ride, I will walk you through the route we have planned. (blatant plug to get people to show up for these...)
I rode this ride recently and noticed the drivers got more hostile the
closer I got to SD.

I did an OC-SD ride last June, from Huntington Beach to Mission Bay. Notables: [a] bring ID to get into Pendelton. It was more hilly in there than I thought but preferable to riding on the 5 fwy [b] you can add 1000' of climbing if you take PCH straight down from HB to San Clemente instead of going in through Irvine and down towards Laguna Niguel [c] the Torrey Pines climb is no different than Newport Coast (if you're familiar with OC) [d] map your mileage BEFORE you ride.
We knew that our planned route was 92 mi. We figured we turn E near Carlsbad, do some loops inland, head back out and continue to SD. Turned out, we nixed that idea and decided we'd loop on Fiesta Island instead. Fiesta Island is inside Mission Bay. When we got there, we saw kite-surfers. 92 mi, 8 mi to go on this friggin' little island where the wind was just howling (i.e., being slammed from 20 down to 12 mph was so much fun). Was absolutely the roughest 8 mi of the whole ride. Other than the painful end, it was a great ride.
Enjoy your ride.
On July 22, some SoCal BikeForums roadies did (Oceanside--)Irvine--Oceanside(--Irvine), with may continuing on down to Solana Beach before returning via Amtrak. Oceanside--Irvine--Oceanside was about 90 miles of pretty easy riding. The ride (and route slip) are somewhere in this monster thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=207680).

yep it is still legal... and I'm one of those nuts that prefer the freeway to Pendelton. One comment about access to Pendelton. There is no garauntee they'll let you through. I've been turned away because they were doing maneuvers. This usually happens weekdays 11:30-1:30.

Just make sure you have an ID with you, I don't know if they're still checking, but I know they were.
Yes, make sure if going through Pendleton that you have a valid non-expired government-issued ID.
This is the latest (4/06) from the CP website - http://www.pendleton.usmc.mil/scout/archives/releases/baseadvise/cycle.asp
There is a rumor that cycling privledges through the base will end due to the number of cyclists refuse to ride single file. I don't know who started the rumor or if it is valid - I usually ride through there at least once a month and don't see many people breaking the rules.

I have heard that people not riding single file was why they closed the base before and why they are requiring ID's (not just 9-11). If you have an ID, they can ticket you for breaking the rules.
And again, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO PISS OFF AN ARMED MARINE? event the marines without guns can kill people pretty easily! I follow their rules every time I am going through there.
