Foo - What Period of History and Where?

Historically, where and when do you think you should have been born. Why?

Here and now.

The 21st century hold the most promise. It's the turning point for mankind, where the decisions we make will determine the course, not just of history, but for the very nature of our existence. For the first time, we have the ability and hindsight to actually evolve from the warmongering, close-minded animal we derived from, and create a society that trancends the base instincts that have trapped our souls for eons.

Or we could blow ourselves to hell, and pave over the ruins with parking lots, Wal-Marts, and Hooters. This thing could go either way, and I want to be here when it happens...

Honestly, I wouldn't have minded living in 2 different times.

1. The times of jesus, mainly because I'm part of a christian religion and I'd love confirmation of christ.
2. New york, around the time joseph smith saw the 2 personages, and recovered the plates. Once again it would help me with a stronger confirmation of the mormon church.

Guys please don't make this thread another "bash mormons thread". Respect my answer, and leave it at that.

I would also say now, the 21st century, my reason would be the weakening grip that religion is having on everyday life. Secularism, etc.

So I asked that no one respond to my comment, and all three new posts thus far people have mentioned freaking mormons. Why do I bother?

Cro-magnon times, and I mean right as we differentiated ourselves from something chimpy, basically the first group to really carry our genotype.

Ancient Egypt-This is the period of history I fell in love with as a child, heck, I was able to read the heiroglyphics on the tablets before Indiana Jones did in the theater. I think my love for history came from learning about their religion and culture, as well.

Middle Ages Europe-Yeah, yeah, everyone sez it sucked, and it kind of did, but not as badly as everyone seems to think. Sure, you had to drink beer because the water was unpotable, but I like beer. Anyway, people seem to think they didn't have fairly complex technology, which they did, and yes, you could just be walking along and a knight could come up and chop off your head and your family would just have to eat it and sile, but they had some cool architecture.

Ancient Rome-C'mon, do I really need to explain? Ever watched "Gladiator?"

Oh, and I would have to have my brain put inside a super-powerful android body that doesn't die, and I definitely wouldn't hang out with any Mormons no matter where the time machine dumped me. ;)

America, 1952. That way I'd be the perfect age when the hippie era came along. My mom used to always say I was a hippie.

Or maybe the European rennaissance....I always imagined I could be a tinkering inventor like there were so many of back then.

With my luck, being born in an earlier time would probably have seen me born into a lifetime of servitude. Here and now would be my choice, but my historical interests tempt me to pick a few. One is the early portion of the Second Punic war - just after Hannibal had entered Italy and was wreaking havoc (I never cared much for the Roman Empire). The second, is the time of Cortez' conquest. I would like to be able to see first-hand what sort of person he was. I'd also pick NoF3ar's events, and would also like to see Archimedes in action (there was a true genius!), and would not mind having lived in the time of Aristotle, just to save the world from even considering all the lame drivel he was able to pass off.

Oh, and I would have to have my brain put inside a super-powerful android body that doesn't die, and I definitely wouldn't hang out with any Mormons no matter where the time machine dumped me. ;)

I'd probably have also been born into servitude and maybe wouldn't have survived long in any era of history but I'm gonna have to choose and am a bit torn. As a woman, any time I choose would suck for personal choice.

in 200-400 years or on the brink of actual space exploration by somebody other then the "leet" people that the government choose. Because I love technology, the future and exploring and I really am not one to force people to make a decision. And I clearly don't belong in this time :)

I would have liked to have spent my adulthood 30 or 40 years earlier, so I would not have had to see the despoilation and over-population of my home. Its a terrible thing.

Historically, medieval Japan or Korea. I figure the worse that could happen class-wise is I'd still be a carpenter, and we have always had the power of the guilds.

the wave is still going on. maybe not the dot com you might be thinking of, but the internet in general is only just getting good. it's still very possible to do big things with low\no money.

i have to say that now is in interesting time. the technology being developed is so fascinating. i just wish some old ways of thinking would die off.

I consider Tom Baker the supreme Dr. Who (mainly because I've seen more of the shows starring Tom Baker) but any of the earlier shows could qualify.

If I had to choose the past I would say the ancient Egyptian times which I believe were over 10,000 years ago. I would want to confirm whether the pyramids were built by a wise sea faring people from pre-glaciate Antarctica or a race of beings from Mars :)

i like now, but there's a few periods i'd like to visit:

871 - 924: the age of Alfred the Great and Edward the Elder
1630 - 1730: the age of the buccaneers
1870 - 1900: the first bike boom
1900 ~ 1952: the great age of ocean liners

Medieval Europe as royalty or Joan of Arc sort of idea.
Ancient China in royalty or Mulan sort of idea.

Maybe somebody could go to the 1890's and introduce Edison or Westinghouse to Ford so maybe we could have electric cars in stead of what we have now.

21st century, only cause I'm rich and I live in a free country. You guys who want to go to medieval Europe have totally romanticized it. It was a ****ty place to live, even if you were rich, which most people weren't. If horrible disease or famine or bad health and hygiene or childbirth didn't kill you, you could always die in one of the many wars! Hooray! If you went back to medieval times, you'd want to live in an Arabian empire. They were much cleaner, richer and more learned.

This is way off thread, but what is it called? The word of wisdom or word of wonder? The dietary code. Maybe you can start a thread in food section explaining, in non-religious terms, what its all about. I bet theres alot of people that visit this forum that follow something very similar to it without even realising it.

Back on thread, I think I'd like to go back to the 70's (my teens and early 20's) again. See if I can do a better job of it the second time around.

I was thinking that if I had to go back in time, that's where I would want to be, being female and all. At the height of the Arabian empires of the Middle Ages, there was no better place for a woman. No other civilization at the time gave women the kinds of rights that Islamic governments did. They could own property, inherit, turn down marriage proposals, keep their own earned income and dowry, had a right to learn to read & study, and escape awful marriages via divorce. Their religious clergy actually believed females had souls and were not animals, which is more than you could say the Christian & Jewish clergy of the era professed.

Of course that was then. Now is a different story altogether.

No, really. Why are you defending yourself with some of these people? Do they know much about what you believe in? Probably not. They're just giving a common target crap. Do they have anything more going on than you? I doubt it.
