Okay, so I've realized that any $500 hardtail is going to need a fork replacement. Which fork do you think is better for XC Racing?
Manitou R-Seven Elite
or
Rock Shox Recon
Thanks!

A Manitou that has SPV, otherwise the Rock Shox.

The Recon is more of an Trailbike/All Mountain Fork. You might want to look into a Reba or Sid Instead of the Recon.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have enough ends to buy a Reba or a Sid, so I'm going to have to stay with the two forks specified.
And, I'm sorry to be such a noob, but what is spv? And, why is lockout so important? I've heard that some mtb-er's don't even like lockout...
Also, I have gathered that Rock Shox is generally prefered over Manitou, but the R-Seven weighs a whole .8 pounds lighter than the Recon and, for that reason, might be better for XC racing...
Am I on the right track here?
Thanks

SPV is an anti bob technology from manitou. Good for xc racing.
Otherwise I am outta this one. I don't know diddly about xc forks specifically.

I think Manitou should stop making forks. Get the RockShox fork. These are great too:

Wow some people are really harsh on Manitou, my take on them based on personal experience is that their performance is competitive and in some particular cases rather excellent but their quality leaves much to be desired.
But yeah, I'd pick a RockShox Reba/Recon or MX Pro ETA over the R7 Elite.
