Bicycle Mechanics - YACL: Yet another Chair Lube Query

I am currently using ProLink. How in the world do you get a small drop per pin?? Do you transfer the liquid to some tiny oil can?? I can only drip a giant blob per pin.

What's with this agonizing about one-drop-per-pin? Add a slow stream as you run the crank backwards to get the entire chain lubed then wipe off the excess. Your time is worth more than $.05 worth of chain lube you'll waste.

Viewed as money you are certainly right. The value is in the noise. As an environmentalist I 1) hate letting more volatile crap escape than necessary and 2) hate wasting the petroleum at $75 a barrel. I make no pretense at saving the world. I just don't want to be wasteful. I (it's all about...) will feel better.

Yes. I asked my local bicycle shop for their empty containers of the 2ounces Tri-Flow, rinsed it out with dishwasher soap, then another rinse-out with odorless mineral spirits, let it dry, then I transferred some ProLink into it. Using the little transparent tube (cut into two halves) that comes with Tri-Flow, I can, and do put exactly a single drop on each chain pin.

It makes my ProLink last a while (it's now $9/4oz bottle at Performance), but more importantly, I don't get a lot of lube where it's not needed, thus maintaining a relatively gunk-free drivetrain.

I tend to avoid lube threads like the plague, but ... fwiw ... I apply my homebrew by dipping a toothbrush into the bottle, then applying the lube with the toothbrush.

No drip. Goes right where I want it.

Cuts down on gingivitis, too!

But why get the chain lubed everywhere where it's not needed in the first place? Inevitably there will be some places that you can't wipe off and those places are going to attract junk that you don't want on your chain.
