Looking to get a wheelset from Tony at IRO for my first fix. He carries the non-machined deep v's. Plan on using a front brake and am wondering how the paint will look once it starts to wear.

Tony did mention it might take a while and that using a Kool Stop Salmon pad will increase the time it takes to wear off.

Just wondering if it'll just end up looking machined in the front or what ?

yeah, it will end up looking machined. but until your brake pads wear away all the unmachinedness, you'll have inferior braking. i'd recommend unmachined rear, machined front, if tony will mix-n-match.

I have non-machined black Velocity Fusions (like Deep Vs but not quite as deep) on my bike, and am using a front brake. The anodizing is wearing off the braking surface on the front rim slowly. Eventually I assume it will all be gone. Braking performance seems fine since installing Koolstop pads.

It depends on whether the color is anodized or powdercoated. The anodized colors - black, gold, and silver - should provide good braking performance right off the bat. The powdercoated colors - pink, blue, red, green etc. - would probably offer significantly worse performance.

mattsimbols has them, and uses his brake as an ohh **** lever. It works better than having nothing, but not as good as a surface that has been prepped for braking.

I run unmachined deep v's and they do decrease performance some. They also like to squeak alot. But they are fine, I can stop fast, but the rain sucks. Rain is harder to stop in.

Why not just get machined? I got a set of non-machined from Tony at IRO and I love them. I'm going to switch to Phil hubs eventually.

ha ha ha, that's awesome.

to the OP, a good buddy of mine has non-machined deep v's and a front brake. he doesn't use the brake much. his only complaint yet is the squeakiness and the marks...which seem mostly to rub off.
