Advocacy & Safety - My Friend is Crazy

One of my cycling friends broke his ankle when he fell off a stool changing a light bulb. His foot is in a cast and he is going nuts because he can't ride. He told me today that he plans on riding with his good foot in clipless shoes (so he can pedal a full rotation) and he will suspend his cast leg from the handlebars with a bungie cord.

I told him he would kill himself especially when he tries to stop. He feels confident that he can unclip and use his dominant foot for support. If he leans the other way, I know it is curtains for him.

You probably will be reading about him in the papers if I can't convince him otherwise.

I've heard of one-legged cyclists, but at least they don't have a cast that they're hanging from the handlebars...

So how many cyclists does it take to change a light bulb?

Kinda reminds me of a guy I knew years ago. He played rugby and ultimate frisbee (two pretty dangerous sports). I didn't seem him for about two weeks, and when I saw him next his foot was in a cast. He said he'd broken his ankle. I said, "Rugby?"

"Nope. Walking down the street. I stepped off a curb wrong and broke my ankle."

I can't talk. After breaking my back and being in an upper body brace for about a month, I couldn't stand not riding my motorcycle anymore. So, I put on a jacket to sort of hide the brace and off I went (on the bike I broke my back on) After about 10 miles of not being able to turn and see around me, I had to conclude I wasn't very smart and went home. My wife still doesen't know I did that.

Tell him you'll ride along with him for support. Then, if he does fall, not only will you be there to help him, but if you catch it on tape, you might win $10,000 for funniest home video.

Hey, I once saw a one-legged guy riding the Houston to Austin MS150 (at least day one of it). Definition of cojones: the guy was riding clipped in.

I can see the one foot clipped in part, but the leg hanging from a bungee cord has gotta not work.

I once got an excruciatingly painful treatment to both of my feet and was unable to walk or even stand for about a month. Well, I could sort of walk and sort of stand, as long as I used the toe of one foot and the heel of the other. What I could do was ride my scooter, so that's what I did and hoped and prayed when I had to stop the foot with the good toe would be on the stopping side.

I see a guy with an artificial leg from time-to-time pedaling around town. Sometimes he's got it on, sometimes he doesn't.
