Bicycle Mechanics - Suspension Corrected Fork

I recently had my LBS order me a Surly 1X1 rigid, suspension corrected fork. So, i stopped in the other day to see if it was in and it was. So I will take the bike in next week to have it installed. However, when i held the fork up to another 80 mm travel fork, in the shop it seemed somewhat shorter from the crown race to the dropouts.

How close in length should a suspension corrected rigid fork be when compared to a 80 mm suspension fork?

Keep in mind that many suspension forks are supposed to be set up with a bit of sag. Keep the AtC to within 10mm in order to preserve pre-spec handling. I personally prefer a little quicker steering so will usually opt for a slightly shorter AtC when going from suspension to rigid.

Well, I don't think that this fork will be anywhere near my current AtC on my suspension fork. I measured the current suspension fork at 18". That is around 457 mm. The surly 1X1 (http://www.spicercycles.com/index.cgi?cat=18&sub_cat=Forks&prod_id=228&cat_desc=Mountain)is supposed to be 413mm. That leaves a 44 mm discrepancy. Which makes 1.73" of difference between my current suspension fork AtC and the new Surly AtC.

I replaced an old suspension fork on a Bianchi that had ca. 60 mm travel. The race seat to axle lenght was 420 mm, I replaced with 413 mm fork from Vicious Cycles. I had to go with Vicious Cycles fork as was 1 in steerer tube. You might want to check out their web site as they make longer lenght forks to replace suspension forks with longer travel. Their quality is excellent but be warned the price is considerably more than Surley.
