Introductions - Alabama Girl

Being very new to cycling--This site has been quite helpful in illuminating multi-layered experience of bikes--And entertaining.
Have Specialized Ruby Expert. Have very happily finally sorted out saddle issue. Still challenged by clipless--but tips found here are making the difference (thanks).
Also work day at a time on layered experience of living in Alabama. :rolleyes:

Looks like I'm just about to make the move to Tuscaloosa... glad there are at least *some* riders in Alabama!

But if you get on ruby, turns the cranks a time or two, you may find that the attached wheels might take you somewhere like, uh, Georgia or Mississippi or Florida or Louisianna. Them bein' the border states. Oh or Tennessee. Can't forget Tennessee.

Expat might even tell you about Papua you stick around here very long. One place I'd like to go and him being closer than me. To Papua that is.

brokenrobot- When are you headed down? There's a very active club in Tuscaloosa with riders of all descriptions- Druid City Cycling Club. But you have watch for falling blinky lights and abrupt paceline stops. If you are going to school there I think you will enjoy the "layered experience " of our hospitality. Get ready for just a wee bit of culture shock. Let us know when you get here and we'll break out the fixed gears.

Yes, you may ask "where in Alabama" -- you, sir, are clearly a southern gentleman ;)
Vicinity of Birmingham--Hoover/Vestavia. And I think living in Alabama is a wonderful thing--where else will kudzu take you down if you stand still too long...and find confederate flags, Mercedes, civil rights icons and American Idols all trading paint in a day's time....

Yes, I'm back. In Utah no less. I wasn't taking any cheap shots at Alabama either.

Why would I ever want to leave Alabama for a a mere border state--although I hear good things about progressive GA--when I too have my sights set on Papua?

If you go to PNG, bring lots of small bills. On a dive trip in Australia I met a girl that had just been there, and she was telling me that no one in this entire village could change a $20 note. Useless trivia, but interesting nonetheless.

Oh well...you guys (and gal) should come up north for the 3 State Century (W.C. Handy Festival) ride in July. I am getting ready for it. I am glad they are doing it on Saturday this year. Last year my friends and I only did the 36 mile option because we wanted to make it to church that Sunday morning. It is a good event, though...plenty of support and lots of good people.

Expat--So you've met someone has gone to PNG and returned. Most harrowing tale that of "change"--amazing. All other firsthand reports are of gunfire, razorwire and mean dogs. Then there's Starbuck's hawking their coffee: This provoked vision of Fall of Saigon--coffee being airlifted out amidst hail of gunfire.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not sure yet exactly when I'll be making the move; I haven't figured out housing yet. I'm moving down for the law school, which starts in early August - so I'll be there by Aug 1 at the latest. And yeah - I think the culture shock is probably going to be considerable ;)

What does the phrase "layered experience" mean?

I've never actually ridden in a paceline - I pretty much always ride solo or in groups of two or three - but I've been lookign at the Druid City website and visited the bike shops in Tuscaloosa when I was down there last week; looks like a pretty good club, and I'm definitely intending to join! And maybe by the time I get there I'll have tried riding fixie; so far, I'm a geared rider ;)

About PNG - I have just been informed by my Princess that her friend who travels there several times a year does so to teach weapons training. It is not the same place that my diving friend visited 3 1/2 years ago.

I wonder if PNG needs an extra mercenary?
