Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Is this Mercier fixie any good?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Inexpensive fixed gear. You'd probably do better with a Bianchi for about $200 more.
I have a similiar bike and wished I had gotten the Bianchi.
And you also have only been riding that Motocrapcane for about two weeks.
i'm still using the frame which i like a lot, and know 2 people who have been riding it stock for about a year regularly with no complaints
for under 350 shipped, its really a great deal

People are a little tired of answering the same question about the mercier, so don't mind everyone's reaction. As stated earlier, use the search and u'll see days and days worth of reaction. I have it, for the prices it's great. I have a 1500 track bike that I don't even use as often as the mercier, maybe it's because i can throw it up against anything and chain it down. The parts are ok for the first couple of months, but u'll eventually are going to start upgrading, the frame is pretty as f**k so get it, just get it and make sportymama richer than she already is

decent frame, but you'll probably end up replacing other parts..probably the wheels first. I don't have any firsthand experience, but I've heard bad stories about the hubs.

I have this bike.
perhaps I got one someone modified and then returned, because mine is most definitley stamped NJS and dura-ace.
hmmm... shill?
No, Sin is not a shill. He's been on the Road Cycling forum as long as I have, if not longer.
It's a BikesDirect.com bike, Sin, and their reputation is somewhat sullied. I don't know how much it matters now, though, as the auction is over.
Any Dawes, Motobecane, Mercier, or Windsor fixie is a BikesDirect.com bike; they've got like 30,000 eBay accounts they use to make it look like there are lots of people buying and selling them.
They aren't *bad*, per se, they just aren't top dollar.

are you talking about the lockring or the cog?
the lockring is NJS, the cog may not be if its 3/32"

The cog is definitely not if it's 3/32.
And I would be shocked if the Mercier came stock 1/8inch.

I had to put a 1/8 on mine.
3/32 was stock.

It's threads like this that keep me from comming back to bike forums. People not searching through the forums before they start new ones.
Looks like I havn't missed much.
People not searching through the forums before they start new ones.
Not to derail this thread, but I'm gonna derail this thread.
What a crock! If everyone who had questions just searched the forums, there'd be no discussion. Plus... maybe, just maybe, people have joined the forums since the last thread on a Mercier (bad example as of late, I know, but just go with me here) who might contribute to this thread that SinCityCycler would miss out on had he just done a forum search.
So here's a novel idea, instead of turning BikeForums.com into BikeSearchableReferences.com, why not just ignore the threads that are re-hashes of already discussed topics?

I have this bike and I use it on the track every week...
The stock cog that mine came with was a 1/8 dura-ace 16t.
I have since changed many things because they just didn't feel right or work as well as I liked, others I changed out of curiosity/experimentation...
1. bars, changed to 3TTT pista.
2. pedals, changed to LOOK with cleats/shoes.
3. chainring, changed to TA Specialties 1/8 chainring(s)..
4. chain, went with a true 1/8 KMC (china special) chain..
5. wheels, had some built for me by the officially sanctioned mechanic .. dura-ace hubs and mavic wheels with tufo tubular clinchers... (the wheels/tires cost more than the whole bike + shipping... lol ).
6. changed the seat to some kind of road bike seat with ti rails, no biggie but feels better than the stock china seat.. i used the stock seat on my road bike =)
thats about it, and so far I am happy with the bike.

It would be cool if we had a dedicated place to put these questions. A suggestion box, or something. Like this.

Really? Mine came with a 3/32 cog.
T-minus 2 weeks until the next bikesdirect/mercier/motobecane/windsor/dawes thread.
Bikeforums corollary: As t -> 2 weeks, the chances of a bikesdirect post approaches 1.

This is a forum dedicated to a small subset of bicycling -- fixed gear and single speed road/track bikes. There are only so many questions that can be asked about this topic without redundancy. Right now BikesDirect.com and their bikes are coming up frequently; but if you look back, people say the same things when questions come up about chainline, or gear ratios, or wheels, or whatever.
I think you'll be hard pressed to find a question (that's appropriate to this forum) that *can't* be answered via a search. Which means that if all-of-a-sudden-like everyone stops asking and only relies on the search, you'll see a very dead forum.

but if it came with a 3/32nd chain, wouldnt the rear cog not fit in it? double check the size of that cog
worker4youth you were off by 1 week 6 days and 23 hours. Someone just posted a question on the windsor.
iamtim. This forum isnt really just about asking questions. Its a place to discuss fixed and single speed bikes. If you look through most of the posts around right now they arent redundant. Even if a question was vaugely responded to or has a few posts and the person wants to ask again i understand. But when there are numerous posts with 40 replies about the same god damn thing with everyone saying the same thing it gets annoying. There is NO point in people making anymore posts about it and using the logic "well if people dont ask questions that havent been answerd over and over no one will have anything to say" is silly.
We need a sticky about bikes direct to get this over with.

I think its hilarious how people wholaim to be sick of BD threads continue to contribute worthless posts (like this one) to keep them up at the top of the list. If you don't like it, then don't open it or post on it. Just ignore it, and if it still bothers you and you can't resist contributing worthless complants about supposed shills or using the search feature, then you have some sort of a mental problem or anger management difficulty or something. Meanwhile I sort of like BD related posts, but thats just me. At any rate, you'll never get rid of them, just like you'll never get rid of posts about chainline, rotafixing, brakes versus brakeless, etc. I think most of you like BD threads, whether you admit it or not, and many of you like them just so you have an excuse to ***** about something.

In MTB and Roadie forums they have specific stickys for bikes at certain pricepoints.
Maybe that and a FAQ might work here too ?
I dont mind reading the redundant threads. Im obviouly here because I have some free
time. Its all good. I dont understand why people need to stop at a thread, comment
on how much it sucks when skipping over it is sooo easy  ??
To stay on topic....Mine is a daily rider. I have to tighten spokes and the crank
arms occasionally but that is all. It arrived in three days and the e-bay seller
said she would take it back it if I didnt lke it. Its worth the 347.00 in my opinion.

a 3/32 chain will fit a 1/8 cog... at least mine did... its the chainring that was 3/32 or maybe even thinner !!! that was scary to ride on the track with so thats why I got rid of the stock chainring and went with the TA Specialties 1/8 chainring(s) (I have more than one of them now for swapping around at the track) ....
I assume the cog is 1/8 because it is identical to all other dura-ace replacement 1/8 cogs that I have ever seen/bought/used/still use.
I could be wrong but it is unlikely...

But my corollary does not discount earlier posts, it just states that when 2 weeks comes, the probability approaches 100%. I think it closely aligns with a logrithmic function:

No it won't. A 1/8 chain will fit a 3/32 cog, but not vice versa. You definitely have a 3/32 cog.

I take it back.
You are 100% correct about the original cog being 3/32 ... however be aware that the 3/32 chain that came with the mercier DID in fact fit on the 1/8 cog & chainrings that I tested it on ...
I then quickly switched to a true 1/8 chain just to be on the safe side........

Too late, damn.
But if the "3/32" chain fit on the 1/8 cog and chainring, then it is in fact not a 3/32 chain.
Maybe the Mercier comes with 3/32 chainring/cog and a 1/8 chain.

It may be so, but let it be known that the KMC 1/8 chain that I replaced it with is a bit wider than the original KMC chain that it came with stock....
