At my GF's insistance, I recently gave away my beloved 1993 Specialized Hardrock. Now, I am really starting to miss not having a utility bike and, thus, have started looking for a replacement.

Why is it that every entry level MTB comes with a sub-par front suspension? I would really like to find a $200-300 bike that has no suspension and preferably a threadless headset (OK, I am asking for too much.) On my recent visits to the LBS, I have left disappointed, finding the only rigid forks were on comfort bikes.

Any bike recommendations?

I have a similiar problem. I have been looking for a good steel mtb frame, late 90's or so that is front suspension compatiable. My 1992 Fat Chance Wicked is a great frame but it is pre- suspension geometry and I would like to build a more "modern" frame up to speck. I have been watching ebay and many bike classifieds.

My point is :) - I have found dozens of bikes like you described, Specialized, Marin, kona, aven a nice Bridgestone with a rigid fork.
They are out there.

If you check most manufacturer's websites, you will find that each one does sell the type of bike you're interested in. Problem being, most shops don't stock them. Why? Simple, for $20-30 more you get one with a front shock. The "entry-level" buyer wants a front shock, so a rigid bike will not sell side by side to a HT w/a fork!

Go visit your bike shop and ask. I'm sure they can order you one!
