Starbucks might not make the best, but the place is uniformly very good. They appear to spend a fortune on the coffee-making machines.
Starbucks, from Seattle to San Diego, anyway, are uniformly clean. (A lot of places I've been to seem pretty dirty.)
Starbucks's coffee is always very hot. I hate the slightly warm coffee you get at so many shops.
Starbucks coffee is fresh. I hate those pump machines with cold coffee.
Starbucks seems to pull in clean people. I hate those places where some of the customers seem to camp out at the shops.

Cortadito made with evaporated milk at Versailles Restaurant in Miami, FL. You have to have to get it at the window and drink it outside with the cigar smoking old Cuban guys discussing Cuban politics otherwise it doesn't taste the same.

The best cup of coffee I ever had I didn't find in the United States.

One day while vacationing in Northern France in 1987, I stopped for a meal in a restaurant after a long day of bicycle touring. The coffee served there tasted as good as the aroma of coffee is when the beans are being ground. I haven't been able to get a cup of coffee that good ever since.

Best coffee I have had is when I grind and put it in my own espresso maker. I am not that picky, I usually find enjoyment from any coffee :)

Lavazza.

They have ONE location in the USA, and the rest are scattered throughout Italy. That location is in Chicago- on 33 N. Dearborn. Even Mr. Lavazza flew in from Italy to check on his store the first month it opened. They definitely have some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. I took one sip, sank down in my seat on the train, and closed my eyes and just groaned in pleasure. People thought I was sipping crack. I think I was. ;)

My cup of coffee is the best! :D
I roast my own. Only the best beans, from Sweet Maria's.
I grind my own. Mazzer Super Jolly: Thirty pounds of purring, coffee grinding snobbery.
I brew it using five different methods, and not one of those is an automatic drip pot. 3 vacuum pots, two brikis, (aka ibrik, cezve, jesva, etc.) two presses, three moka pots, and a Solis SL70. There's also a commercial espresso machine being rebuilt in the kitchen, which will eventually replace the little Solis.

Otherwise, I'd recommend:
Portland, Or.-- Stumptown. They roast right in the shop, and use acceptable beans. They also know what a double ristretto is, and often as not pitch the first attempt dialing in for a customer's shot. The only shop in Portland serving coffee that isn't stale.

Seattle, Wa.-- Zoka! They've produced a few international barista championship winners. Their coffee isn't stale, and the world's best competetive baristas can generally be counted on to know what they're doing.
--Cafe Vivace, home of David Schomer. From everything I've heard, he sounds like a real obstinate know it all, but I wouldn't turn down any shot he deemed good enough to not pour down the drain!

And there was a drive-thru only Lavazza on IL-59 just north of IL-64 in the west 'burbs, but it closed about a week ago. Never tried it. Always make my own at home in the morning.

We've got a Bunn-o-Matic at work. People mainline coffee all day here.

Is it a Lavazza cafe/restaurant, or just Lavazza? We have Lavazza cafes in Chicago also, but none of them are the official Lavazza coffee shop. According to Lavazza himself, he said he just wanted the one location in Chicago for now, and if it does well, they'll expand.

Allegro Fresh roasted beans from Whole foods,
ground at home and run through a french press.

or
Braunerhof in Wein (by the Spanish Riding Academy with the Lipizaners (sic))
a cup of grosse mocha is sublime, best coffee I've ever had.
(but then almost any coffeehouse in Vienna is excellent).

Who makes the best cup of coffee?
I do (in my press pot). Especially when I have some pure Kona peaberry that I grind fresh for the pot.

Wanna come over for a cup this weekend? :)

Not sure if it's the best coffee in the world, however whatever drug Tim Horton's (Canada) puts into their coffee keeps me coming back.

Hi,
I recently saw a small batch of really good coffee go for $35 for a 12 oz bag.
It sold out in a couple days. It's hard finding the best nowadays. When you do it's
really expensive. I used to drink it all the time in the Seventies. Oh well.

Ugh!! I hate that crap.

I know a lot of people swear by Dunkin Donuts...especially as there is one adjacent to us on the back of the copmany property. But of all the times I've tried it, I've never really been that impressed.

I've seen those- they've popped up all over the place, but trust me- it's not the same thing as the Lavazza coffeehouse in Chicago. Plus, you can buy the beans or coffee grounds there, or you can buy products too- the espressomaker, cups, etc.
