Hello-

I am completely new to the world of cycling. I did a little research and had been looking for inexpensive, used road bikes that I could commute to work (about 12 miles) on. My strategy was to simply check out pawn shops, thrift stores, and the like. Here's my question: I ended up buying a red/black 1976 Raleigh Grand Prix in very nice condition for around $80. I still have the opportunity to take it back for refund if I decide to, but I like it so far and the price seemed fair. I have read a wide range of opinion about this style of bicycle. Although it looks new, it has clearly been hanging out somewhere for decades (perhaps).

What should I do to get it in good working order before commuting on it? I've heard the braking system described as "evil," though I don't know why. I bought a new seat and new tubes for it, already, and rear tire rack with some saddle bags. I'm looking for advice about maintainance/care and consultation on the price I paid for the bike.

Thanks from a newbie,
Stephen
