okay...got carried away there...anyway, portland kids! as i was reminded by another thread that's going, it's time for barbecues, beer drinking, bike riding, and some general et cetera. who wants to have a potluck/barbecue thing? i can have it at my place if no one minds coming to north portland (i live near the dancing bare strip club).

so who's in? next weekend good?

May I ask why Portland is abbreviated as PDX? Maybe it's totally obvious, but I'm just not seeing it.

nah, i didn't know until someone posted it recently...most pdx threads sort of turn into a portland history swap after a page or two. anyway, the old weather codes were two letter abbreviations...la for los angeles, pd for portland, for example. some airports used their own abbreviations, jfk being one well known example. others simply added an "x" to the weather code. lax and pdx, to use the previous examples. anyhow, why it's the city's nickname...i dunno. i like calling it puddletown.

Interesting, thanks.

Here is what I just found via Wikipedia:
Portland is known as "The City of Roses" or "Rose City", nicknames that originated during the 1905 Lewis and Clark centennial exposition[citation needed]. Its climate is ideal for growing roses, and the city has many rose gardens, including the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park. Other nicknames for the city of Portland include "Stumptown", "Bridgetown" (due to its numerous bridges), "Puddletown" (due to the weather), and "River City" (due to its proximity to the Willamette and Columbia Rivers). Modern colloquialisms for the city include "PDX" (after the city's airport code), "P-town", and "Rip City" (from an exclamation by Portland Trail Blazers radio announcer Bill Schonely when the team scored an exceptionally good play).
